Q: Tell me why.........
I don't mean disrespect here, these are (for the most part) genuine queeries. So someone tell me.....
Why do people eat with their mouths wide open, then cover them to use a toothpick?
Why are those street-sweeping brooms 7 foot long when the women who use them are only 5 foot tall? I've nearly been swiped off my bike a dozen times by them, they can hardly see you from under those tin-foil covered, bath-mat sized frisbees they wear on their heads, they're like satellite dishes.
Why, when there are perfectly good pavements to walk on, do people choose to take their evening stroll down the middle of the road? Surely they know that half the cars don't have their lights on anyway.
Why does a country so prone to severe condensation choose to tile the floors of its homes in marble? Is China hoping to produce Olympic skaters from this peculiar practice?
Why do girls who need glasses go around squinting instead of wearing a pair for fear of looking unattractive (that squinting look is not a pretty one girls), and girls who don't need them wear lenseless frames?
Why..........is chicken prepared like that? Haphazardly hacked to pieces with a meat cleaver. Is navigating ones tongue through a minefield of razor sharp shards of bone supposed to be an enjoyable part of the culinary experience, because I just don't get it? Mightn't it be as easy to cut said chicken into slightly larger, more accommodating pieces, then simply sprinkle a little broken glass over it before serving?
Why, in a country which has English on its national curriculum, has every student i've ever asked complained that they have no-one to practise it with?
Why, after discussing the specials, ordering a burger, medium fries, a large coke and telling the waitress i'd like to take it away, all in fluent Chinese, does she struggle to give me the price in English (then send me home with a fillet burger, McNuggets and a Sprite)?
And why.........oh why, oh why.........are there wing-mirrors fitted to Chinese made cars, e-bikes and motorcycles? The guys don't use them, and girls, make-up can just as easily be applied using a hand-held.
To the Chinese members of this forum, forgive me if I cause offense, but there are multi-gyms in the playgrounds and park benches in the living rooms. You give your loved ones money in an envelope to show your affection, they change it to another envelope and give it straight back. You'll understand if i'm a little confused.
Why every time I bought something in a store for 5Y do they need a calculator to figure out the change from a 10Y? or 2 from 5? I thought Chinese were brilliant students?
Why when crossing the street with plenty of time will an on coming car speed up so you have to jump out of the way or be run down? Do they get a bounty for running over pedestrians, do they get to paint another kill count on theirs doors, or do they believe that hood ornaments are targeting systems?
bill8899:
I get the impression that they use the calculator for MY benefit! It is hilarious!
Or maybe they do it because they think I can't understand Chinese numbers but that is the one area of spoken Chinese where I excel.
Anyway ...
Tell me why,, sounds like a typical caucasian comeback to ''No Why''. It made me think of The Beatles song. ''Tell me why ( you cried, and why you lied to me),,,,, maybe they wrote this after visiting China?
mArtiAn:
This is bugging me, I know everything the Beatles ever wrote and I have no idea which song you're talking about.
TedDBayer:
Dust off your collection. The song is on the album 'A Hard Days Night' I think a fitting song for China, has why and lied to in it.
OP, I think the salient question is: Why do you eat at McDonald's? Yuck.
TedDBayer:
I had a Big Mac once, about a third of the way into eating it I noticed the middle layer of the pattie was grey. What kind of meat is grey? I chucked the burger.
icnif77:
rats and donkeys are grey
.
...Ain't nothing but a heartache...
Am I the only one that thought of the Backstreet Boys song when reading this question?
Funny list though.
You maybe a new-comer to China. It is cultural differences.
You can contact me if you have more questions.
A Chinese friend with glad to help.
Scandinavian:
A shame you do not have enough help to write answers to OP here
Traveler:
Cultural differences? What is cultured about eating with the mouth open? How is bad service at McDonalds part of Chinese culture? Why would you think somebody who has been in China for eight years is new?
Didn't Yoda say "Why or why not, there is no such thing as why"?
Scandinavian:
yeah, that guy is full of crap (why/try)
"If no mistake have you made, yet losing you are ... a different game you should play."
mArtiAn:
Yeh, what does Yoda know? The guy's three hundred years old and he can't speak proper English yet. His grammar's all back to front, it's like Chinese. I don't study Chinese grammar, I just study vocabulary, then when i'm speaking I pretend i'm Yoda. Wearing the robe helps.
TedDBayer:
I blew that should be, Do or do not there is no such thing as why.
Shining_brow:
No Ted, you got it right (for the Chinese Yoda)... TIC :p
(and, if you don't like it - why not edit??)
OK. We need to deal with these questions one at a time right?
They eat with their mouth open because while they eat they need to talk (loudly), drink beer, smoke and spit. It gives the impression they are eating with mouth open but they are really multi-tasking. Toothpicks with mouth closed? They don't want others to see how bad their teeth are.
The women sweeping the streets are part of the population that gets paid a stipend for doing these menial tasks. They have no supervisors and no-one really knows if they are out there or staying at home. The brooms are big and you're right, the hats actually are satellite dishes so they can be picked up by Chinese satellite and their attendance at work is duly recorded.
The pavements are a veritable minefield of twisted, chipped, broken and missing paving bricks, rubbish, drain holes and mountainous undulations. The road is flat and even (in most parts) and safer to walk on regardless of traffic. The Chinese driver is an expert in avoidance so the pedestrian is safe.
In north west China we have pavements and public courtyards done in ceramic tiles, believe it or not. We have snow and ice in the winter - a period of 6 months! Even ants and other bugs slip on this surface. You have no reason to complain.
There is a popular saying: Girls with glasses get all the passes! The squinting ones who need glasses have not been able to read it and conversely the ones with lenseless frames have.
You seemed to have solved the problem of eating badly prepared chicken at restaurants by going to a fast food place and getting a filet burger, even though that was a result of an error in the order! Well done.
The wing mirrors are an option when you buy the car. You are offered turn indicators or a louder horn or a device to clip into the seatbelt to stop the annoying warning light. Many buyers opt for the wing mirrors but if you look carefully you will notice that an indecently loud horned car will not have those mirrors and if you sit inside a vehicle and the 'Fasten Seatbelt' sign doesn't flash that vehicle owner will also not have taken the mirror option. An outward sign of affluence is a car owner who has all 3 options!
I'm still working on your last "why" but that confuses me too and I have no sensible answer!
OK?
Hugh.G.Rection:
DD your words
"The Chinese driver is an expert............."
I never thought I would EVER read those words in the same sentence! Congratulations.
Scandinavian:
It is hard to believe, but it is perfectly cromulent to use "Chinese driver" and "expert" in the same sentence.
E.g. "Chinese drivers are expert iPhone users", "Chinese drivers are experts in driving without following any rules"
In the village no one cares if you fart loudly in the middle of the street.
In the village no one notices people walking in the middle of the street, cares are infrequent
In the village your kitchen consists of a fireplace, all the tools you need for cooing is a block of wood, an axe and a wok
Although half the Chinese population have moved to the cities, the village mentality is still prevalent. The social structure of the country, where you are raised by your grandparents and you are taught not to question people older than you, means that change is slow. The transition from village to city has happened so fast that now China is a country, not of urbanites, but villages stacked in concrete boxes.
It is generally safer to be on the street than the footpath, as there is less chance of being hit by a car/bike/truck.
Tell me why they feel "hot" in winter ? in office here, the AC is closed, temperature here is about 20 deg. , just comfortable for work. But, my chinese colleagues are in need to open the windows, when out is about 3-5 degs, and the polution you can cut with knife, how it is thick. But, they are in need for "fresh air " specialy these pusseees guys use the catalogues as fan now, coz is too hot. ouch :(
Scandinavian:
the quest for fresh air puzzles me too. but there is the added bonus of also getting a lot of noise so you need to talk louder inside
mArtiAn:
Yep, the fresh air thing. God forbid we should be cozy and warm and have to breath the noxious fumes that permeate within the home, jostling to and fro in their devilry for the purchase of our souls. The very thought.
Nessquick:
Yep, the noise always increase step by step, till the moment, when you can not listen yourself typing comments :D
TedDBayer:
I always had to put up with the ''need fresh air''. Gf would come over and open my balcony door wide open. l would say l need warm air, you want fresh air go outside. No listen. She sits in front of a little heater in her apartment with all the windows open. TIC
markpracy:
Yeah its the chinese mind, ass about face mentality. 'They are from another planet'
I just saw a small kid driving one of those electric plastic cars with a top speed of a turtle. He was put in, and strapped in with the seatbelt.... so few people strap in their kids when driving on the streets.
This whole fricking country is stranger than fiction and defies logic. But maybe what we see as incompetence or stupidity is really well-disguised brilliance and only they know the answers to these great mysteries? Lets just hope they use the same "logic" when designing their weaponry.
Amonk:
Unfortunately the Russians aren't as adept at Chinese logic when it comes to their designing Chinese weaponry.
a thing I have yet seen including in any bashing is the fact that people do not lift their feet when walking. people at a slow pace will drag their feet across the ground. the last couple of days have been particularly horrible as families have gathered for CNY and have taken slow feet-dragging afternoon walks.
Amonk:
The shoes are so cheaply made it's the only way to keep the soles on your feet.
Tell me why I don't need any form of evidence for income/financial support when coming to the country for 6 months, yet when I try to extend my visa for 30 days, I need to show 20,000RMB ????
(and, WTF is 20,000 for in 30 days??? I use less than that in a month! Or 2... maybe 3......)
As for the toothpick thing:
Due to the nature of some of the food, you can get some weird things lodged in your teeth (sesame seeds, chicken bone splinters, etc.). Covering your mouth while trying to remove them is to prevent flinging your mouth-food at others.Watch how most Chinese people use toothpicks and you can understand that this is a very serious threat.
Scandinavian:
I think OP is referring to the fact that chewing is happening with the mouth wide open, which is why this concern (which I think you are spot on) is not making sense as people are already spitting food in all directions while talking with food in their mouth
Here's what I think (although probably wrong on all counts):
1. Mouths wide open for eating is showing appreciation (bit like burping in the middle-east), it's also why they slurp noodles so loudly. But while appreciating the food is socially acceptable picking bits out from between the teeth (with a toothpick or a fingernail) isn't - dunno why, there probably isn't a good answer.
2. Long brooms? Because they're imported from Trondheim where they're made by giants. Unless the giants are on strike in which case trolls make them. (Or more likely the guy that buys the brooms uses govt funds to make purchases from his brothers company but the brooms are designed for export to Russia where people are considerably taller.)
3. People walk in the road for a few of reasons. Obvious ones at this time are: A. They can't change direction when a car is racing towards them because that would require acknowledging it and moving out of the way which is impossible. Each Chinese person is their own universe and the world moves around them. Acknowledging the existence of others who actually cause them to alter trajectory may in some way demean their grandeur and so is unacceptable. B. An actual good reason to not walk on the pavement during the summer is if there are those worm things hanging down on threads. I hate bugs in my hair, and I'm not ashamed to admit that.
4. Marble floors. Well not always; tiles yes, but all marble? And do you think that's real meat you're eating?
5. Girls that need glasses don't wear them because they're not "cool". They obviously need glasses because they've been studying so they may look silly squinting at everything but the air-heads are the "fashionable" ones using the lenseless frames.
6. Not peculiar to China. Have you ever had a fish curry - ya get bones. That's just part of being in this part of the world. They cook the WHOLE animal - the fat, the bones, the grizzly bits. Adds flavour. Apparently. And generally nothing gets wasted - in some cases the bones are literally sucked clean.
7. Because the local English teachers here generally can't speak English. They read it, they write it, they can't speak it. And they can't admit that because of the usual face issues. It's also to guilt you into giving free English lessons.
8. Because if you're ordering a burger and medium fries you're in a fast-food joint. Are the teenagers working in the fast food industry of genius level intellect where you come from or are they the people that learnt to tie a shoe lace at the age of 15?
9. Good question! Maybe wing mirrors are like lenseless glasses. If you don't have them you're a dork.
chinese have a reason for open mouth eating, and it is totally understandable for an intelligent human being......... it is about aeration and flavor ...... when you have your mouth open, after inputting food.... the food gets more air and thus more flavor as you break it up in your mouth.....it really is simple and very smart........ didn't your MOM tell you to Chew your Kraft Dinner before swallowing it? .... aeration is good!!!
Why does my breath stink so bad that people have to cover their nose and mouth everytime I try to talk to them.
Why does my butt itch when I step outside. Well not recently but before it did.
Why did I pick my buggar today and place it somewhere where somebody would touch it.
Why am I addicted to video games when they don't even have my favorite game Virtual soccer.
Why can't I find that shark icecream>>> WHY!!
10/10 that was fun!!
TedDBayer:
No wonder I like you so much, you're a fun guy, add this to dropping a turd in a hot tub, barfing all over a bus. You're a real outlaw. ![]()
