I haven't tried it here, and I'm really not excited to do so. But, Star Wars is coming out soon.....
Do I dread too much? Or won't it be as bad as my nightmare suggests??

Going to the movies is hell on earth , Pop corn is sweet and disgusting ( DON'T BUY THE POP CORN) chinese ppl always playing on their phones or chewing with their mouth open ( nasty chewing sounds) or talking to each other.Oh and dont forget them kicking the back of your chair whenever they wanna move.
It drives me crazy to the point that one time i slapped a chinese guy infront of me in the back of the head cuz he just wouldnt shut up.
Anyway the new hunger games is coming soon, so i will be expecting a fight with some chinese idiot soon....

hahahahaha........have me rolling on the floor, that a**hole deserved it.
As others said I suppose it depends on where the theaters are. GZ maybe better.
Star Wars won't be out here until the new year.
Go for it....I go regularly in Guangzhou and only occasionally do I have to tell the gobby idiots to shut up. Quite civilized in GZ
I honestly enjoy going to the movies with the wife....... just not as often as she wants to go.
we have seen numerous movies that I probaly would never have gone to at home, but they are fun.... great night out once in a while. The theatre here is top notch and clean and, well top notch!
I loved going to the movies at home, and it's ok here too.
Ok, the popcorn is sweet and people around you talk on their phone sometimes but overall it's still a fun night out.
Yeah, don't count on any good western films being released until after Chunese new year. They will want to protect the Chinese film industry. I find theatres here aren't too bad but to be honest I prefer watching a film at home with a beer and some snacks.
We have an IMAX which I go to from time to time, but it is quite expensive at about 90yuan. I usually download movies and watch them at home on my big screen TV, but for the good ones I would make an evening of it and treat the GF.
BTW, does anyone have an idea when SPECTRE will be released in China? Apparantly it was released today in the rest of the world.
earthizen:
I am downloading Spectre (torrent from pir*te b**). The Martian is good, to Matt's credit. Bridge of Spies is OK, similar plot as The Green Mile which Hanks did years ago . Btw, if you watched Mission Impossible Rogue Nation without the plane shots (Cruise hanging outside the plane), the complete cut is out, near DVD quality.
yongge:
Thanks, I will check out the movies you mentioned. I am using k*t, but nothing there yet. For some unknown reason I cannot open ***bay.
earthizen:
I PM you the link just now. The original Pr.B** was taken down earlier this year, there are several '2nd generation' versions, the one I sent you should work. Ki**a** doesn't work for me. tt*p** still works exceptionally well, stable and fast. The Martian definitely is worth watching, so is the latest Mission Impossible (Rogue Nation).
TV series: Minority Report, Blindspot, S.h.i.e.l.d, Arrow are good SF (started in October). You can watch them almost real-time, only 1 hour lag. Makes you feel you are back at home (US), haha.
Shining_brow:
Well, part of my Q should perhaps come with the additional info that I've got a 3D projector, and so I can watch moves on my wall - about 3m x 2m... and the sound as well. But that's still smaller than a full screen Star Wars movie with really high quality sound... but will the locals ruin it for me? Or, the subtitles?? They would annoy me as well :(
And - who the hell downloads camjobs??? I always wait a couple of months for a good DVD or BluRay version!
I was watching Shield, but like many others, gave up... to tame, too predictable, to nicey nicey.. Arrow I just found too ridiculous in it's basic plot - that someone be at a party, and then across the street up a building, and no-one notices anything out of place! I means, seriously, can this guy teleport??? That 'minor detail' sort of ruins it for me (same with Batman - how can you have a 'secret identity' and no-one suspect when you happen to just disappear all the time???)
earthizen:
Haha, don't forget the mobiles ringing. If you are used to the conveniences at home I am afraid there IS indeed a risk here. To reduce that risk you can ask locals who frequents that specific theater you plan on going to. Be very specific about your questions, their standard can be very different than yours.
S.h.i.e.l.d and Arrow have fancy planes and costumes, good looking girls (for guys), vice versa. You can't expect these SFs to be like great movies given their budgets. They aren't too bad. I gave up Gotham after only one episode, or Flash for that matter.
As for the plots, this is something most people don't know but straight common senses. All script writers have a golden rule, write something that targets the collective IQ (i.e. mass) if you want to keep your job. Same applies to movies. Meaning ---- the level of intricacy is adjusted to suit people of average IQ. Find me three good movies that talks about the meaning of life that sell well!
OK, here is a plot, guy meets girl, guy leaves girl, guy meets girl again, ..... Gone with the Wind, hahahha. This is why you need to go for other things, the use of shots (long, medium, close-up), lighting, costumes, music, actors' performance.....
A good criteria I use for grading a movie is, do you remember it after watching it, and talk about it? Hell, the majority of movies I watched I know the ending within 2 minutes, I also can't remember what I watched within 5 minutes, hahaha. So why did I still 'waste my time' on them? Just enjoy them and get a good laugh for an hour or so. C'est la vie.
A non-SF stands out if you want good acting and plots, Blacklist (actor, James Spader). Beats most movies and TV series. It is on, season 3. A rare jewel, it makes stupid, superficial ones like Castle looks like a kindergarten level composition. Even CSI only makes grade school when compared to Blacklist.

The question is when will Star Wars come out here. Since they only allow a certain amount of foreign films to be shown each year, and we're already in November, I wouldn't be surprised if this year's quota is up and we have to wait till January.
But yeah. I try to avoid going to the cinema as much as possible here. If you thought China was annoying to start with, don't bother going.
well this should piss off the censors for the rest of the year.
