Q: Is there any difference between Chinese yogurt and your hometown yogurt?

I couldn't find the Greek yogurt in Chinese market.  Too much additives in Chinese yogurt!!!

Is there any difference between Chinese yogurt and the yogurt from your hometown? Taste and ingredients... any brands without gelatin?

Chinese yogurt does not exist in organic, it seems like very industrialized products. I too miss a plain yogurt with no added flavor.

Any ingredient further than milk and the appropriate bacteria culture are superfluous, and perhaps some fruit for flavor.

Chinese yogurt usually is thinner and drunk with a straw rather than eaten with a spoon. The absence of live cultures (noted above) is another factor.

I think bike-gypsy's answer is bar far the most humorous answer I've seen in a long time.

Scandinavian:

It's not wonder there is no live culture in it, no culture survives 5000 years

Well I came to China about eight years ago, so my hometown yogurt will have gone off by now, that's one difference.

I really should have thrown it out when I left, now I come to think of it.

Chinese yogurt is like thick tangy sweet milk drunk with a straw. The flavoured yogurt I am used to in Australia is much thicker, more tangy and eaten with a spoon. I often bring a few 500mil tubs to China and those who tasted it love it. In saying that the Chinese version is not terrible and I drink it a bit.

There is a thick and a thin yogurt. I always shook the containers to judge for the thick ones which I like. I never found plain yogurt, but like the date flavoured.

woody:

Forgot about the date yogurt. I like it too.

Yeah there is a big difference in the flavor. In my hometown the yogurt actually has flavor. Chinese yogurt has little to no flavor at all.

I am not sure that Chinese yogurt is really yogurt. It is more like sweetened sour cream. I make my own plane yogurt.  recipe:- buy any regular yogurt with active yogurt cultures. ( I tried to make yogurt with acidophilus but it did not work?) Get milk no fat, 2% or regular milk. Heat the milk to 180F -82c let cool to 100F - 38cC for half a gallon put a full table spoon of yogurt in the milk and keep it at 100F - 38C for about five hours. This is easily done by putting it in your oven with just the light on . A 25 watt bulb will usually work. The next time you make your yogurt just keep a table spoon full of the last batch and add it to your 100F - 38C milk. Hope this helps. Franck3
