Try a thai, vietnamese, lndian restaurant or the like. They will almost always have vegetarian menu. And are more willing to make sure that the cooking process is in fact vegetarian.

Pure Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant in Beijing. Good food, excellent tea selection, but inordinately expensive.

Search the Happy Cow website. Got lots of listings for real vegetarian restaurants. http://www.happycow.net

I suppose it all also depends on what you mean by "pure" vegetarian. Vegan? Lacto-Ovo, Pescarian,

I've been to some great vegetarian restaurants in Guangzhou (normally near temples) but not good if you are vegan as they used milk and eggs.

i've also found a good selection of indian vegetarian restaurants in GZ, around the backstreets of the Xiaobei area.

From your username it looks like you are Indian (apologies if you're not). So I'd guess you are a lacto-ovo (milk and egg eating) vegetarian, You should be able to fin something but not if you're in a small city.

I'd totally recommend Happy Cow too. That website can tell you the vegetarian restaurants in whatever city you're in, location, contact information, whether they're vegan, vegetarian, or veg-friendly, cost, and also reviews. It's not perfect, and sometimes the information is out of date, but it's a good first place to check.

I found one place in Nanjing, and one or two in Shanghai which were purely vegan, but I'm not sure which city you need help with.

Indian restaurants aren't going to be in every major city, and might be a bit pricy compared to local food, but they are often a good bet for vegetarian food, and they are more understanding when you ask.

Hotwater:

Agreed about the Indian restaurants and city size. The veggie ones in GZ are small and do buffet's for 50 kuai a person!

You are not saying where you live, or intend to live... Intentionally vegetarian restaurants are not common in China, but never completely inexistent. In Suzhou, I found one nice restaurant serving traditional South Asian style vegetarian Buddhist food. I also found Indian restaurants with a large choice of vegetarian dishes. Subway have *one* vegetarian option. In general, it's not hard to order dishes without meat in a Sichuan or a Zheijiang restaurant. It might contain some meat, then I eat the vegetable bits, my wife eats the meaty parts.

Be warned, for many Chinese, when you say "no meat", they don't get it. There will be small chunks, or it will be fish, or they will use animal fat for the sauce, etc.

Agree. My ex had a hard time for finding vegetarian food since he is a vegetarian.Instead I cook for him.^^

There are some, but China is not a place for vegetarians, meat products are everywhere in a way or another, meat, meat sauce, meat supplements, meat dressing, ... the same applies to Japan with fish and to a lesser extent to most other East and South-East Asian countries.

I found a awesome big vegetarian resturant in Jing an temple of Shanghai city. The vegetarian resturant serves Chinese vegetarian food and western vegetarian food,it is a pure vegetarian restuant, even animal oil is not allowed. Will be good to go if you are in Shanghai. Also many western resturants serve vegetable pizza,pasta,salad.,etc.I am sure you will find them.Another directly solution is try to cook yourself if you get time.I am half vegetarian now.lol.
