I have not seen instant grits in China at all, but I do have a friend who lives in southern Georgia and he does mail me a "care Package" once a year with a couple of cases of grits.

As a Southern Gentleman, I also miss them sometimes.

I am originally from LA, but one time when I was young I was doing a road trip across the US.  During that trip I stopped in a diner in S. Carolina and when I ordered my chicken fried steak, the waitress asked: "With or without?"
I said, "With or without what?"
She gave an exasperated sigh and said, "Grits hun.  With or without grits."
I looked at her and said, "What is a grit?"

That got just about the entire diner laughing and lead to an almost hour long tutorial on grits, their history, what they were, the best way to cook them and how stupid northeners are for never hearing of them.

HappyExPat:

XPat John: you just had a very common occurance that happens to many Yankees visiting Dixieland. I have had my share of fun along those lines too. By the way, to me one of the best grits I have ever tasted was the ones served at WHITE CASTLE.

Never had grits at White Castle, but I did have the burgers. Honestly, I will take In-and-Out any day over White Castle.

Found instand grits at my Carrefour in the import section the other day.  At least I think they're grits, as a Northerner my concept of grits is shakey at best.  What I found looks like wet mashed potatoes, and is labeled "Potato Puree" since the box is in French.

xinyuren:

Potato grits? No my son. Real grits are made from hominy (corn). My god, I miss'em. My gf makes corn porridge which helps with the shakes and contractions from my withdrawal.

I've seen them at city shop and a few japanese markets in Shanghai, but not on a regular basis. Polenta is as close as I've come when I have a cravin' for 'em.

Considering their love for corn, you can probably find something like it at the grocery store, but you'll have to make it yourself. I swear I saw something like it at Walmart, and this is a small city. I could be wrong though, since it was all in Chinese. But hey, they have oatmeal, and I didn't expect that either.

Xpat.John:

If you know what cream of wheat looks like, or a very thick porridge, that is what grits looks like. White & pasty. :)

I have never understood why people love grits...one of those foods you either love or hate.  I spent a year in the south and could not bring myself to like them....or collared greens.  But pan fried hashbrowns are da bomb!!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
