Q: Is there malaria anywhere in China?
Maybe Yunnan? Does anyone actually take malaria pills though? And which ones would you need?

Malaria can be encountered in all of China. The high risk area is near Vietnam and Myanmar. I would think season has some impact too.
For the area I am in, my doctor back home recommended Hep A&B, Tet, Typhus but not malaria.
It also matters if you are in a big city or out in the sticks. Trekking across a rice field in shorts does put you more at risk than sitting in an airconditioned Starbucks in Shanghai.

South Yunnan, the jungle-covered part. The problem with malaria pills is that they have strong secondary effects, either depressive moods (not cool if you roam the wilderness by bike or foot) or sun hypersensitivity (not cool under sub-tropical climate). And also, the local variety of malaria is kinda resistant to known pills. I would use such pills only if you stay months in that area (ie. South Yunnan).
The good news is that the mosquito that transmit the malaria is nocturnal, so sleep under a mosquito net, wear pants & long sleeves by night and she'll be right.
I don't think it exists up here in the northeast in Qingdao. I'm more worried about stuff like bird flu, pneumonia, TB and food poisoning,
Yeah, I got infected with malaria, sadly.
Southern China has a different kind of malaria than the one which ravaged Africa. It's like Malaria-Lite, or something.
I took anti-malaria tablets, and the secondary effects (like DrMonkey said), were SHITTY. They caused my body to overheat, develop heat rashes, and I slept upwards of 19 hours a day. I couldn't go out into the sun without nearly melting.
Unless you have a compromised immune system, you'll be fine.
