If you're looking for a more grownup place, Cafe de la poste, between 北新桥(bei xin qiao) and the Yonghegong temple, or Salud, in 南锣鼓巷(nan luo gu xiang).

There is a french bakery called Paris la baguette or something like that. It's really quiet in their had some people playing chess there before. It's a pretty good hangout to play chess and have a small get together. The one I'm talking about is at GUomao right next to WAll Street English.
