Q: Is there really any coffee in those tube packets?
I don't know if one brand is better than another but I just don't feel like I am drinking real coffee when I use those foil tubes filled with powder when I need a quick fix. Does anyone know the truth about the contents of these suckers?
There's more coffee mate and sugar in those 3 in 1 packs. I usually drink Nescafé or Maxwell. There's coffee but if you are a caffeine addict then you may need copious amounts of it to quench that caffeinated thirst.

I used to pour 2 bags into one cup of 0,25ml and I need 2-3 cups to feel as I drink one spoon of Tchibo non-instant coffee :-)

I normally use ground coffee beans which is available from better supermarkets. There's quite a variety from France, Germany and the US. I have a French press which is from Star Bucks. I use instant coffee only when I am too lazy to wash the press.
Try Nescafe or Maxwell, much better. You can also try their packed jars instead of tubes to fix as per your taste. Be prepared to pay 40 to 50 RMB per pack.
It's bad quality compared to the aromatic stuff I'm accustomed to in Holland. But then again, the UK has crap coffee too.
When I first arrived in China, I was making my own iced coffee with the things, and drinking loads of it every day to endure the stress and heat. But it gave me the runs about once a week. I weaned myself off it, but not without withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine is still an addictive drug, no matter its legal standing.
Last Sunday I made some more again, because it's getting warmer now. I can guarantee you that it's got caffeine in there, because after an exhausting day with 6 hours of teaching, I still managed to give my wife a happy ending.
If you don't consume caffeine too regularly, it's stimulating effects become potent again!
I buy Vietnamese instant coffee on Taobao. Cheaper and better .
I wondered the same thing. I'm not sure there's any coffee in there. Now I drink various beans from Starbucks. Just brew it at home. Happy every day!
Look at the calorie count on those packages, might as well have a coke.
It is possible to get "proper" Nescafe in 1 cup sachets, but the bigger the glass you buy, the better you spend you money. Best is if you can get near Hong Kong or Macau, big tins of Nescafe there are less than half the price of in the mainland.

I've used them as emergency coffee too. It's certainly not good coffee, but still a useable hot drink, oftentimes a good cup of tea is better in my mind/stomach.

My wife, and me too sometimes, use this nesscoffee 3in1 in a morning routine for emptying poo bag. it is fast, usually 2-3 sips and we run ... 
IKEA is a cost effective solution on the ground (need machine).
Internet is the best if you have access to online shopping (need machine).
Black Nescafé instant powder, more widepsread but overpriced, for emergencies.
NEVER buy anything else than pure coffee, unless you enjoy paying for sugar a price you shouldn't.
Fortunately, I'm not really that bothered about coffee. I prefer tea.
