Q: Is there really a need for the fen (0.01 RMB coin)?
I rarely encounter a situation in which I am asked to give a fen as part of the payment, and yet these weird little coins that are not mao (0.10 RMB) just keep adding up in my change purse.
It will take me years for me to accumulate enough to make a roll that will get me 1 kuai at the bank. So what should I use them for? Beer pong? Stablizing wobbly tables? Tips?

It's given as change usually only for transactions in official gov't centers (including Friendship Stores). I use them for game tokens and for poker chips.

You beat me to it. I also use them as poker chips.
When I gave beggars some money, I put in a one kuai coin and some fen.
i paid a bus card with it, the busdriver looked weird at me and became angry but i still threw all in 
Never forget that the development and income gap between provinces, cities and rural areas, and even neighborhoods can be truly enormous in China. From developed cities up to whatever-tier-what-you-can-still-call-a-city, you could argue that there's not really a need for such a small amount, but bear with me when I say that in some extremely remote areas, a fen can still mean something.
I've never encountered one. And if I had 1 Fen for each time I heard about them, I still wouldn't have 1 Jiao
I have found 2 piece, in a week on the elevator floor. Do not know what is the mean. but it is just time when the money budget is tight for me
Must be like the pennie in North America. Is it paper, or a solid object. I've never seen one.
