Q: They checked me with the white slip at the Beijing Airport!?

Before I entered Gate 2 this evening, there were two uniformed cops performing body & luggage touch-check with the piece of white paper. Cop inserted paper into the small reader, which played sound after 5 seconds or so. After the sound bleep, cops let me enter the building. I wasn't yet at the check-in entrance. I didn't show my passport or ticket to anybody yet.

What are they checking? Chemicals or Bird Flu comes to mind.

They are checking to see if you are from hell:

if the paper burns when it touches you, then........

on a more serious note: it sounds like busy work

thanks for the heads-up, i'll sneeze on them when i pass through the gate

icnif77:

I went to the Coffee shop for Internet after the check. After some 2 hours on the internet, I went back out again, and cops weren't there anymore. I never saw such a check before. He had piece of white paper, and touch me, my briefcase and luggage. Then he stick the thing into the machine, and: beeeep. I saw some 10 people had been checked same way. 2nd cop was a girl. She was touching (with the paper…lol) girls, only. I'm serious! I promise!

I can well believe it.

it really sounds like pointless busy work designed to fill shifts and 'control' the passengers though the fear that they might be doing something illegal

Very strange! Pointless 'quota filling'.....make them busy. I was thinking about HN bird flu, but I don't think, virus is detectable from the 'outside'.

I'm still at the Airport, before check-in, and nobody's at the entrance. Pointless exercise, probably.

I had also seen that and one day I asked a friend [a cop] and he gave me this answer:

'we touch someone with a special paper that upon contact will indicate if a person has some residual explosive [dust]'. Then they run it through a small machine that analyzes the result of the paper reading. If it is a negative reading, you can go, but if the readout is positive, they will detain you for further questioning.

icnif77:

Same thing as you're describing happened here. It was very quick check. All 10 people were through the check in less than 5'.

It might be check for the group from Xinjiang, only.

I bet those guys checking you are trainees getting some practice before the busy holiday travel. And like others said fill a quota. Next time ask the female cop, can i bend over and you use the white paper here.

icnif77:

No skin touch, you 'bending skinny'. Just touch on the outside. No particular part of the body, either.

Once, I watched dog going into the the bunch of people (in Tangshan) on the open square. Dog 'entertained' people at first with his handler, and then it went and mingle with the group.

Most of the Police dogs I watched, start search on command. This one (lassie mixed dog) was performing tricks with his handler first, then dog went and 'played' with the audience. If you'd watched carefully, dog would always sniff owners bag first, and then it would get 'happy tail' for sniffing of the owner of the bag. Dog would bring all 'presents from the audience' to the handler. Owner of the 'highly priced' dog will always protect her/his dog, by training it to eat only handler's given food.

the problem with using dogs in China is that a very high number of people are terrified of dogs. also, if the handler gets hungry....

Only highly trained dog won't eat 'presents'. Most regular police dogs not even sniff your 'present'. This lassie took it, and bring every single item to the handler. It wasn't 'You eat that crap!' message to the handler.

This is a China forum and you are talking about a "highly trained dog". In China, what are you on drugs ?

Icnif! Your written English is loquacious and impeccable today! What the hell happened last night? Slept with Rosetta Stone scientology brain-wave EEG thinking cap overnight?

You don't sound like the icnif we all love and cherish... And where are the smileys?

Anyway, you got away with it, right? I mean the white paper test.

Have a great holiday, my friend! wink

Explosives residue, the funny thing is I experienced this in Shanghai at the entrance to the terminal, but you could walk down to the next door where there was no check to enter. I guess they want to catch the really stupid terrorist.

icnif77:

There is no much logic into that (any) procedure. It didn't look to me, we were single out for the check. I arrived from Xinjiang, and I was guessing at first, it is an 'explosives' check. But, an hour later, Police were gone.

At the Bus Station (in Fukang, Xinjiang), they have one woman, who performs body search on anybody.  I like to be body searched by woman anytime. Sometimes, at her nap time, people just walk by. If I would be fluent in Chinese, I woke her up, and 'demand' my body search.

They do the same check in UK airports.  I have been checked air side just after security. Checking for drugs they said. In my case they wiped the inside of my laptop bag before dropping the swab into the machine.

Cheaper than drug dogs I expect.

it's bomb residue. they are just spot checking because they don't want to do everyone at the same point in the process...random.

icnif77:

We were single out, because we arrived from Xinjiang, I think.

From Xinjiang? Definitely swabbing for explosive residue. If they were looking for drugs they'd use a scanner. They started random laptop swabs in US after 9/11, I'm not sure why they check the laptop.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
