Been in Beijing for a while now, lived in Wudaoko and Southwest of Wangjing (north Chaoyang). I feel like I have a fairly good grasp on the city, particularly the "popular" areas, but then I'll look at a map and realize that I haven't seen anything in the entire south/southwest parts of Beijing. Been to Qianmen, Temple of Heaven and Taoranting Park ... and that's about it.
What's there to do down there? I know it's the "poorer" part of the city, but there's gotta be something worth seeing.
Thanks!

to be honest nothing is really worth seeing in the South of Beijing. But try hopping out of the city to some towns South of Beijing like Bazhou (2hours on the bus) which has a Opera Museum if you are into that stuff.
Next time you need a good dose of depression head down there. My wife lived there when we were dating and whenever I visited I would think "god damn, what grim place." Unfinished housing developments and sidewalks all over the place, stray dogs galore, what wasn't demolished from days gone by should have been. The only good thing was, in the new buildings, there were good restaurants. But jesus I hated going to that place.

That's unfortunate. I wonder if the city has any plans to gentrify or develop it. Perhaps when the new airport opens it will spur interest in surrounding area.
nevermind:
Eventually it'll get done, I wager. But it really is like heading from Beijing to Shijiazhuang in a matter of minutes.
I wonder if things are going to change now that the line 10 is open. I ride it every day and its been insanely busy lately now that all of those new western and southern beijingers are hopping on.
IN the west there's Badachu, worth a hike and few nice temples. There's also Shijingshan mountain in Mentougou. I used to have to teach in Mentougou every Friday night and was driven through it, though once you get past the factories it's not too bad.
