Q: Those little moments that give me hope for China

Guangzhou line 1 Gongyuanqian station today. The train arrives, one side to get off (opens first) and one side to get on (opens second).

Usually, all the passengers know this and get on the correct side. Thing is, the side to get on the subway is also the fastest to get from/to line 2 in the same station and there is always one smart ass who thinks he is going to to take a shortcut, disrupting the passenger flaw and just being an ass.

Today didn't miss, one lady thought of this. She stood firmly on the wrong side to exit the train, despite there being a sea of passengers ready to get in.

When the doors open, she started pushing a way against the flow, shoving and yelling to other people to get out of her way.

Unfortunately for that lady, the staff felt like enforcing the regulations and she was stopped in her way then, as the train was leaving with me inside, I saw the staff taking her away. Hopefully she got fined.

Karma is a bitch.

Scots, I seriously think you have a problem. Your interpretation of this is way the fuck off. As he clearly stated there is always someone doing this. Therefore 'she' is not unique. .... Not even worth the time. (*edit )Assess facts first, then develop an opinion.

expatlife26:

yeah I agree on the spectrum of selfishness<==I==>individualism I think that falls firmly on the selfishness side of the line.

It's inconveniencing others to try and gain an advantage.

I think Scots is a guy who really strongly believes in egalitarianism and Randomguy is (for better or worse i'm not saying this provocatively) emphatically not an egalitarian so he's kinda disagreeing with him on principal.

I feel like if somebody else presented that story Scots would be agreeing that selfishness over community shared resources is wrong and that we should be willing to sacrifice for the greater good. But cause it's RandomGuy than that person is just showing individual thinking.

The keyword here is consistency and this is where China fails.

Say, Gongyuanqian station has a good supervisor who sees to it his/her staff members carry out their duties, so you are lucky to witness the event. However, when it comes to other stations it can be an entirely different story. Meaning, on a small scale it may work but on a larger scale of administration, it breaks down.

This is because ultimately the country is run by people (ie guanxi/hongbaos/backdoors), not laws.  China has never had a democratic system with built-in checks and balances. Who dare exposes Xi's guanxi network and ask where the astronomical amount of financial assets his siblings/relatives/their spouses comes from? Well, a foreign reporter with Bloomberg did that. What happened? Bloomberg got barred from China.

The smarter ones among daluren (and their parents) saw this decades ago already. What choices are there? Wait and hope, sure. How many lives do you have? Do you have 5000+ years?  Scream hell and run? This is called "brain drain"; an everyday phenomenon.

edit: Yes, karma sucks, for most.

Retired I wouldn't risk it. Even with the uniform, an angry mob would side with the law breaker against you because you look Foreign, and then beat you dead. This is China.
