Q: Those in relationships with Chinese - how do you handle money?

This goes out mostly to those in serious relationships with Chinese partners - how have you managed finances? Do you pool all your earnings? Does your significant other keep most of their earnings or place as much as you do?

I can not talk about what others will do, because it could be true or not.  But pooling what others have mentioned to me, plus what I do, it is always remarkably the same, it just varies in the amount.

Most Ex-Pats I know, including me, do not pool their moneis with their hetter halves.  Instead, they will give a fix amount each month to cover household expenditures, and pocket money if better half does not work.  This fixed amount will cover mainenance fees of apartment, rent if any, utilities, food, and other micellaneous expenses.

And the amount given fluctuates per couple from 10,000 Rmb per month to 5,000 Rmb per month.

we have set down rules on our money.

For groceries - one week she pays the next I pay
Rent/Bills - Split 50/50
We also put away 5000rmb (2500rmb) each month which goes into a savings account.

It's diffrent out of China to here for us
I pay the big bills and hand over the rest less some pocket money for me.
I have to encourage her to spend some on a night out once and awhile.
swear her folks are realy Scotts.
it's that thing of saveing incase of an emergency or the future.

MissA:

Ha! I used to live in Scotland, and now live with a Scot and he's shit with money. I think the reputation is somewhat unfounded!

My bf pays most of the time. I offer to pay sometimes and he was really happy when I paid.
We don't have rental expense, both of us have our own apartment. I have mortgage and so does he. If we go for a vacation, hotel and flight is 5/5. In conclusion, in our relationship, he pays more.

We have a joint account but I am the only one working at the moment. We just spend when we need to in Australia but I put a lot of my salary into my retirement fund (one day it might get a return). Still manage to save a fair bit after expenses becuase similar to Phil's Mrs she is very frugal with most things. We eat at home mostly in Australia.
She has an apartment in China and gets a rental return from an office she owns so that money pays for us when we are in China. We eat out a lot more there but the places we eat are not expensive and try to fit a trip to some other part of China in on each visit.
Pretty good arrangement as far as i'm concerned and we should be able to live comfortably and travel a bit from now on.

Wouldn't matter, if you have accounts in China and a relationship goes south, she or he will get 50% of the money.

You can also try and hide the money by keeping it in an unknown account but the government is able to find it quickly via your passport and visa number. This gives the Chinese a benefit for most Chinese can keep the money in a family account which gives the foreigner no rights when a divorce happens.

The foreigner on the other hand has to either trust a friend or continue to transfer money into your home country account.

On that note, I let my wife handle the money, frugual is an under-statement with her so she banks 80% of all our income monthly, I send 40% of that into an account in America

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
