Q: For those of you who moved to the North: Did you put on weight pretty soon?

So I'm just wondering if any of you that moved from south to north China have put on weight due to the more noodle/general wheaty diet? I say this because I have a friend visiting from South China who used to live in Beijing and he's really thinned out.

It's odd for me because I can't gain nor lose weight it seems. I stay relatively the same. I might try to take whey protein I've already started to hit the gyms. I stay in the Emerald Captial City of China and I east Fast food almost every single day! (Drunk!

I read there are 5000 beauty parlours in Beijing, I'd loose weight just window shopping all day.

Yes I just imagine, like you imagine that you're American. I've been to Beijing five times. You can never get a visa. Take my picture and ask people in Guilin if they remember me. I'm famous there.

Moved from Guangzhou to Dalian and the cold weather coupled with the carb loaded dishes here do make it easy to put on weight. I also agree with Crimo about eating out less in Guangzhou because I hated Cantonese food.

Every winter I go into hibernation here and put on the extra weight (only about 5 - 7 kgs) to keep warm although 2 kgs of it is body hair I cultivate to counter the cold. Summertime we have mosquitoes in big enough groups and individual size to carry you away to their swamps and suck you dry so evading them provides great exercise hence a loss of weight. The summer humidity re-sculpts your body in tsunamis of sweat - also equals weight loss. So I guess it's a cyclical thing and we northern folk live a bit like Yogi bear in Jellystone park and our picnic baskets are actually outdoor BBQ's.
