Q: to tip or not to tip?

from a comment from Da Ben got me thinking about this subject
We dont tip as a general rule at home .However from time to time I might slip a couple of extra Bucks if I think they have gone out of their way to help me.
Even in China on the odd occation and have had it been refused and told no need.
(that one was hard to belive but true)
I know some people in the USA and other places make their living this way
so what do you think about Tipping?

I love not having to tip in China.  When I first came here I still used to tip cabbies and waitresses but soon stopped when I realized it's not expected.
Sometimes they consider it an insult...like you are basically saying they don't make enough money, so here is some extra.
I was actually shocked to learn there is no tipping in Australia when I was there.  It was a cabbie that told me the truth funny enough.
I still sometimes slip the taxi driver a few extra moa's if he gets me there fast, but that's it.

Shining_brow:

Actually, Dude, that's not quite right about Aus... tipping is not EXPECTED in most industries. For a cabbie, "keep the change" is not unusual. Same in most service industries... but not in a fast-food joint. In a restaurant, if you feel the service or food is good, then tipping is accepted, and higher-end restaurants would expect a good tip... especially if there are quite a few of you dining. (tipping cos they're cute is also acceptable ;-p) Ie, we tip because we feel the food or service was worth more than a basic pay! Possibly the only exception I can think of is the pizza delivery guys

When I was a newbie here, I would tip. In the smaller cities or towns, often times the person who was tipped would give me back the tip telling me the price of the meal and that I gave them too much.
HOWEVER, in bigger cities, as soon as the bellhop dropped my bags he would walk right up to me and stick out his hand, palm up.

I hate the the whole tipping thing. It has got little to do with the money and a lot to do with me having to work something out when I am paying for something I want to enjoy. Just include it in the upfront price so I can then weigh up the cost v service/product and make my decision then get on with enjoying the product. Americans have a lot to answer for by subjecting the rest of the world to this distracting annoying and demeaning practise. Charge me what you want, pay the staff  what they deserve and if they don't perform deal with them like any other employee. Please resist the temptation to tip and if the bellhop walks to you with his palms up give him a low five and say thanks.....

Hi Jíliú.hé here I was talking about the larger better western style restaurants not the small ones where you cannot guarantee you are eating what you ordered

If I hear any of you have tipped someone, I'll hunt you down. We have a good thing going, let's keep it that way.

I like to give the girls at the noodle shop a few extra rmb. They really do give me service above & beyond, and the tip shows them I appreciate their work. And on the selfish side, it keeps the personal service coming...

see that is why you tip

Honestly, I think tipping is silly. It doesn't show how good the waiter or waitress really is, and it varies from person to person, as well as where you go to eat. I mean, should a waitress get more tips just because she works at a fancier restaurant? My grandpa is a little strange. He'll tip generously as long as the waitress keeps his water glass filled. If she doesn't, he leaves pennies. Also, if you go as a group of 8 or more people, they automatically add the tip, so annoying.

Just think of all the tips your giving when you pay for a nice fancy <insert something expensive> from any 'bargain' shop.... Such as when you paid 500RMB for that 'real fake watch'.

like everyone else here, i prefer the cost being in the price and not tipping.

However I usually round up in a taxi if they are polite...because its a rarity

I don't tip in China simply because more than half the time you are paying more than a local anyway.

Nope. I don't tip in China, because it is not expected nor generally recieved. As someone posted, somethimes they get offended if you tip, so, on that que, I stopped tipping soon after I arrived here.
