Q: Tips for pregnancy in China?

Doctors, where to buy prenatal vitamins, things like that. Anything to avoid? Anything to watch out for?

Pregnancy in China is totally different to what we are accustom in Western countries.  At least, in my experience.
To answer so me of your questions, for example doctors first.  I have seen ladies who go the whole nine months without even seeing a doctor once,  others may see the doctor once or twice, and their explanation was that they felt OK, no need to see doctor.
Prenatal vitamins, control over gaining too much weigth, etc is not common unfortunately, and I would venture it is not from the doctor's side but from the patient side.  Sonograms are prohibited by Law now so baby's sex is not known until birth (to prevent abortion of girls mainly).

If you are facing a pregnancy in China, you should insure that whomever is pregnant does have a doctor, knows the hospital she will have the delivery done, proper analysis are done to determine the need for certain foods and vitamins to insure good health baby, weighjt control of expectant mother is established to insure a baby between 6 anbd 7 pounds and avoid delivery complications.  Doctors visits become more frequent as the birth date approaches, drinking alchoholic beverages and smoking should be avoided during pregnancy.

And last, prepare yourself for the weirdest customs after having a child in China.  Wife to be one month in bed, mother in law takes care of baby, wife does nothing but lay in bed.

nevermind:

Luckily the wife thinks her culture is even more ridiculous than I do and can't stand her parents. So, they'll be no in laws or laying in bed. Only thing is we will have her sister come over for two weeks to help out after the delivery. But yeah, I have really had to push for the pre-natal care. It's like she doesn't understand how important it is.

If you can afford it, I'd try to arrange a private VIP room at the hospital when it comes time to deliver the baby.  The first time I saw 4 new mothers (one of whom was a friend of mine) sharing a cramped room, it was a little saddening to me.  One small room, four new mothers, their babies, their family and friends coming and going at all hours... I know it's the norm here, but not something I could deal with personally. sad

One of my GFs friends came back from the USA to have a baby in China, which I think is crazy for so many reasons, however she told me that Chinese women need to stay in bed for a month before having a baby. I'm starting to think Chinese women are just lazy. ( for many ,many many reasons)

Mr_spoon:

The belief is also that the women, after giving birth, must NOT bathe/wash herself for a while, because it's bad for her.

Why is it bad? Because fuck science and sense, that's why!

Pre-natal vitamins: Anything by a company called Ferguson (They specialize in pre-natal vitamins/supplements) and I can personally say they are quality stuff.

Hospital, if you can afford it, a private room is by far the best.  The hospital my wife gave birth at was quite good (in Guangzhou).  If the woman was giving natural birth (they will always try to push for c-sections), everything takes place in the woman's room.  The baby is even placed in the same room as the mother.

The rooms also had an extra bed for people to stay on.  Each room had it's own 24/7 staff.  The staff would teach the new mother how to care for the baby, feed it, clean it, etc...  Very, very nice.  Even by western standards.

Make sure she sees a baby doctor at least once a month.  I can't stress how important that is.

Oh, don't be surprised when they won't let you see ultrasounds or tell what sex the baby is.  They are forbidden by law to give that kind of info, even when one or both of the parents are non-Chinese.

Good luck in your new adventure.  Get all the sleep you can now, because you will miss it in the future.  (And stock up on coco butter.)  :)

nevermind:

Yeah, I didn't want to know the kid's sex anyway. Too bad I can't see the ultrasound though. I'd like to see it. Ferugson eh? Can I get that at any pharmacy?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
