Q: Tips for working in international trade

I'm a foreigner working in China and I'm interested in getting in on the international trade business.  I've heard of a lot of foreign teachers earning extra money this way.  Does anyone have experience in this field, or do you know any resources on the subject.

I already have connections with a few Chinese companies that want to find foreign customers for their products.  Any advice would be appreciated.

My advice would be don't rely on internet-forum-people for advice; get qualified and learn everything you can about the industry you want to work in, and the exact products you want to become involved in trading in.

Yes, as a MissA stated, have to do some own research. there is a milion things you may to find as interesting for buy and export from china. But better be specialized in one field, or two, and do maximum of that. If you can keep focus on the one field, you may easily search for better factories and better prices, more likely than jump from kitchen wares to sporting items and to furniture and than back trough others. I did this before around 5 years, trying to do my best, travel a lot around china for factories and so on, but never can have enough time to be specialized in all.

After a time, i said NO to myself about exporting any thing from China to my home-country. I am doing now opposite way and trying to open own business back home for own people. And here is something, where we both need to do same : research the market, find out what the people need, what they will like and on what they will spend the extra money to be worth of it.

And of course, when you choose something, find out, what restriction for customs and taxes and set in your country for import those things. some may be tax free, some need pay maybe 20% import tax.

Good luck with your decision.
