Q: Today a Cinese friend said to me, If foreigners have a hard time finding jobs
Today a friend said to me, "Hey, if foreigners have such a hard time finding jobs, why don't they start a business." I laughed a little, because it was unexpected. Then he said "if Chinese have the agents that hire foreigners, why don't foreigners make agencies to help each other foreigners find jobs using their guanxi." To this I said well, I'm not sure about the temp agencies. So, he said well "if foreigners want jobs, go make a job." This left me pretty speechless. What do you all think?

If It will be that easy in this country, then we already did it, right ?
That's going to happen sooner or later. Otherwise, nobody will want to come back here if they keep getting scammed or their employer always seems to be unfair. For me I'd rather work for myself than work for others.
I don't have too many problems with jobs so I don't have much to say about that at this particular time.
I have given up discussing job situation with Chinese people. The fact that they all get a job based on who their parents know seems to give them an unrealistic view on how it is to try to find jobs as someone who just got off a plane.
Start a business = get scammed by Chinese people 24/7
GuilinRaf:
Start a business, get a partner.
Get scammed by partner.
Hire a lawyer, get scammed by lawyer.
Complain: do time in prison, pay lawyer and scammer "reparations" and deported.
Scandinavian:
sounds about right, know a guy who has just recently made it to step two, it's his second round, he didn't make it to prison the first time though
It sounds like the ramblings of someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
Many foreigners have an easier time finding jobs in China than practically any other country in the world (including their own). The selection process is far from rigorous in many cases.
Although it mind sound silly because its not an easy task always, it is true in anywhere in the world that starting your own business is typically better than working for others.
I do know plenty of foreigners who come to China and eventually open their own business. Of course its not an easy task always and it sounds like your Chiense friend doesn't understand that it's not something you can just easily do, especially if you dont know how to run a business, dont know chinese laws, and dont have a lot of money up front to invest.
Your friend mistakenly thinks we have a hard time finding a job? Hardy har har.
Kaiwen wrote a masterful guide to starting a business here, but you need a damn idea to start a business. Something better than "I guess I can sell shiny things at the temple." I believe there are restrictions against foreigners owning a recruiting agency. China keeps the sweet cake when they can.
Your do know your friend is quite misinformed, don't you?
