Q: Is the "Tomb Sweeping" holiday a good time to travel?

So, as many of you may recall from my previous question about traveling to Xi'an, I'm looking to go in the next month or so. I just saw on a calendar today that "tomb sweeping" holiday is coming up next month, which as far as I can tell is a 3 day public holiday.

I'm curious for my own travel plans (as well as for others looking to travel) if this is a good time to do so? Something I read online said that it's not really a "travel" holiday, because people are paying respects to their deceased elders, but does this mean that things are going to be closed during the period? I'd hate to get all the way to Xi'an to find out that the Terra cotta Warriors or Hua Shan were closed for the holiday.

Any one have past experiences traveling during this holiday? Is 3 days enough to take in Xi'an?

Thanks

Last year during Qing Ming, me and my gf decided to just go to some of the local scenic places.  Basically using my place as a home base, and then making day trips in a car.  The first day wasn't too bad, but the second day (actual day of the holiday) was awful.  Traffic was terrible, people everywhere.  Of course, your mileage may vary....

In my opinion, any Chinese public holiday is a bad time to travel.  But then again, my tolerance for crowds, shoving, pushing, queue-ing and queue breaking is pretty low.

All Chinese national holidays are hell for travelling, since everyone has the same time off and wants to travel. If you can wait until summer, it is generally less hectic then.

i am from Xi'an, It is for certain that  the Terra cotta Warriors or Hua Shan will not close during the holiday, but i'd really agree with Averageguy99, so i'd suggest you

Go Anywhere during Chinese Public Holidays!

LAR:

"Go..............Holidays!" I disagree. Depending on where one wants to go, it could be Hell like

averageguy99 alluded to. "If................then." I agree based on my personal experience.

Happy traveling!

If you can extend your trip a day or two more you will have fewer travel problems.  Two years ago we spent 5 days in Xi'an during Qing Ming Holiday.  Huashan Mountian was completely packed with tourists until you get closer to the summit.  The Terracotta Wariors was also interesting.  If you go, make sure you go to the "Muslim street" and  get some really good foods.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
