Q: Top 10 best places to see in China?
I was looking for traveling inspiration. What places do you think are must see that may or may not be off the beaten track? Please exclude Shanghai Suzhou, zheijang province and Beijing as I've been there.

Shenzhen Boaan Airport

Qingdao Airport
The last two depends on if you consider HK and Macau to be China or not.
there are many places off the beaten path.
But if they are mentioned on a forum, people will flood there...

1. Dunhuang from there you can go to Crescent Moon Pool and Mogao Caves though taking pictures inside the caves are still prohbiited :(
2. Zhangjiajie (best in late Sept, early October)
3. Mount Leshan + Mount Emei (April no rain)
4. Mount Siguniang in late September or early October (not so easy to get around, but the views are magnificent)
5. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong (again late September and early October)
6. Guilin (bike or boat trip from Guilin to Yangshuo)
7. Pingyao ancient town
8. Datong (Yungang Grottoes + Hanging Monastery)
9. Hani Terraced Fields in late January or February (Yunnan)
10. Minority villages in Guizhou (Zhenyuan Ancient Town, Xiaohuang Dong Village, Langde)
I think it's a sad indictment of this forum that you can't ask a question like this, without getting typically sarcastic answers from the same regular OPs. No room or effort for more enlightened discussion about experiences in China. Sometimes I think the Chinese who look at this forum must be shocked. They expect intelligent reasonable discussion from Westerners who are supposed to be more open and intelligent. What they get is dicks like spiderboenz and mike365 thinking they are the height of wit and humor. In reality they are indicative of the people, sadly that China attracts as ESL teachers (a few other oddballs who pretend they are not in the esl profession, as if you can magically transfer from esl to a wondrous non esl career with little Chinese or experience in western companies). A mix of asshole and weirdos.
Chinese visitors are probably shocked by the spelling and grammar. Most Chinese English major graduates know the difference between their and there, your and you're. Mike has an almost special needs way of writing. These are the most basic grammatical rules of English. If you do not know the difference when you're approaching 30, it's a safe bet to say you read very little and should not be teaching English. Nor have you gone to a decent university, or have anything valuable to say.
I think there are more girls in China than evidenced by this forum. They see the immature answers dripping with sarcasm and leave the forum.
I was looking for a forum with decent blokes, sharing experiences and information about China. You get people who don't realize the tedious nature of posting sarcastic answers EVERY time.
It's a shame because Echinacities would have started this forum with the best of intentions. They just get the most cancerous personalities making discussion impossible. Overall the quality of question and posting does not justify the smug superiority over the Chinese.

Come on Dokken. Its a rather broad question you have to admit. If you had asked " I am thinking of a trip to Yunnan, good places to visit?", I suspect you would have got some decent answers. I saw your question this morning... top ten places in China... no idea. I was going to sugggest Long Jie terraced fields in Guangxi, but thats only one answer while you asked for 10. You could at least try to help build up the conversation. A bit more detail. do a google and ask "What about this place or that place?"

You're right Scotsalan. It was not a good question. Perhaps I left myself open to dickish answers. Perhaps they would have answered thay way anyway.

I do enjoy humour and the banter... and the sarcasm... but sometimes serious answers are much better! That one does not deserve to be upvoted so much!)
Spider & Mike - have you checked out the thread on how frustrating it is for Chinese to never admit they're wrong?? It's not just Chinese....
Personaly, I enjoy the journey more than the destination. I could quite happily spend a week on a slow train going nowhere in particular.
I like Guangxi area. A 12 hour overnight train from GZ. Maybe visit the dragon back rice terrace. That is a gotta see. Very famous view. Then Yangshou for pizza and beer. World class scenery. Then a small hotel I know of across the river from Xingping. From there a walk up the riverbank to the scence on the 20RMB note.
I like this area because it is where the cormorant fishers are. When I was a kid I had a book with photos of that. Now I can go there for a weekend... and say bo yow to the cormarant fishers photo hustlers

Mate, I rarely post cuz of the decreasing quality of the forum, this is the best question I've seen in a while so here goes.
Don't do Yangshuo (Xingping is fine), Pingyao or Fenghuang, they are absolutely overrun. Yeah there used to be some merit going there, not anymore.
I highly, highly suggest Xiahe and Zhagana in SW Gansu, no tour groups even on holiday, super cheap, beyond stunning landscapes and actual authentic local culture. Just Google some pics, you'll see what I mean.
