Q: Tourist Visa Expiration

I have a friend from America that came here on a one year, muliple entry, 90 days duration tourist visa (L visa). His expiration on his visa is April 1. He reentered China on March 1.
i told him that the expiration date is the last day he can enter and still stay an addtional 90 days after the day he returned to China.

So he reentered March 1 but his visa expires April 1 (yesterday). However he still has about 60 more days to stay? Am i correct? the visas expiration states last day to enter. However his travel agent says it expired yesterday and he needs to.go to the PSB asap for an extension.

Does anybody know the answer to this?

You are correct.  In an "L" visa, you have three different  components to look at :

a.- the validity of the visa.  In this case, one year.  And that means that "whomever" can enter  China at his pleasure until April 1, 2014 included.

b.- the number of entries. It is either 1, 2 or multipe entries or"M".  I do feel that needs no further explaining.

c.- the "stay" That means each me you enter China, you can stay for the number of days indicated, in this case 90 days But be aware, it is 90 days, not 3 months.

In this particular case, since your friend entered China on March 1, 2014, he must leave by May 30, 2014. But do your own math to be sure, I have not have coffee yet

thanks for the reply. Well my friend inforned me that his travel agent said if you call the US embassy You and I are both correct. However this travel agent says China customs has stopped many of her clients and they had to pay a huge penalty. The agent said its best to leave before your expiration.. WTH.

If the travel agent is Chinese,  a sure he doesn't know much.  For Chinese Officials, a visa is a permit to enter China, and the"stay" part regulates the exit.  This is why you can enter China on the day the L visa expires, and legally stay the number of days authorized.

And if he is not Chinese, he knows even less

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
