Q: Travelling with Chinese stories
I am sure we all have similar travel stories to share, a particular recent experience made me rage and it was on board an international flight to China.
I was on an flight leaving Amsterdam back to China, I put my small backpack in the overhead locker which was completely empty, a few minutes later a youngish Chinese female and her mother (draped in Burberry/Chanel attire, wearing sunglasses indoors) who had quite a few shopping bags with them had the seats in front of me waltzed in late. The female decided to push and squeeze 6 large bags in two of the overhead compartments and took my backpack out and leave it on the floor and shut the locker. I was so annoyed as not only did they take over an entire locker they took another passengers, so I tapped the woman on the shoulder to let her know that you can’t take over like this, it isn’t your home but she put on her headphones and ignored me, that was the point where I thought a swift Kung Fu kick to the head might make her pay attention. I was lucky because before I totally lost my mind and started throwing her and her shopping bags all over the place, two Dutch stewards had been watching and looked annoyed too, so they both came over and told the Chinese woman to move her bags from my compartment but she didn’t comply, the plane was already running slightly late because of her and her mother who acted as if she was asleep!! The stewards apologised and there was no room under my seat as there was a metal box or something under it so my bag was moved into one of the steward’s locker.
Lastly getting off the plane, they took forever; hitting anyone in sight with their bags and funnily enough other Chinese passengers started shouting at them to hurry up and stop giving Chinese a bad name, one elderly Chinese women said sorry to me on their behalf I think she noticed what had happened early on and this made me feel really bad, none of those two women responded and quickly rushed off the plane.
I despise this ugly attitude and find myself telling my Chinese friends, colleagues, students that no amount of money or owning brands will make you look and come across as a beautiful person if you are ugly inside, of course they don’t believe me or think I am talking nonsense.
On a positive in my experience I have always had really good domestic flight experiences, but on international travel there seems to be a certain type of person/couple/group who always causes some issue. I have friends who are Chinese air stewards for both international and domestic flights and some of the stories they tell me are beyond beggar’s belief.
Anyone else have positive, negative, interesting travelling stories to share?
Also, you should have yanked those earbuds out of her ears and screamed at her.
we need to start a therapy class for this subject.
rule 1 when traveling with Chinese wfe
take a different flight...failing that make sure you pack the bags then lock them.the lock is to keep wife from putting stuff in that will cause distress going through customs.
be prepared for the loud old Chinese woman that will sit to rows behind you but can be heard through out the plane giving lectures about how see is in charge.
then there is the Paris Hilton of china that the op met
alcohol is good
and this is just another example of why I drink
The first line should be the airlines themselves... 1 carryon bag is ONE carryon bag - not 3! I suspect we've all come across these people - both international and domestic.
Secondly, the stewards need to be more assertive. In not being to save one customer, they are leaving a bad impression (who tell a lot more people) on many more people.
Lastly, yes it does happen on domestic, but it would be more likely on international because they have more money, and therefore more attitude. A simple attitude killer would have been "sweeyheart, if you're so damn special, why are you in economy and not first class?" (obvious answer - because money can't by class
)
I think the punishment for this kind of entitled, childish behavior should be immediate removal from the plane, immediate confiscation of ticket, a lifetime ban from all airlines and a fine equal to every cent the filthy moneynong has to its name, effectively putting them back in the dirt with the other savages where they belong.
Who keeps giving these retarded nongs money anyway?
Also, you should have yanked those earbuds out of her ears and screamed at her.
Good behavior abroad starts with good behavior at home (and the literal home). Chinese society and government encourages rude, senseless, inconsiderate, disgusting behavior. How many times have you seen or heard about people making their children piss / shit in a mall or on a bus? How many times have you seen cars stop blocking all other traffic and ignoring all horns because they want to deal with their own matter (talk to a friend, use their phone etc). In China people are taught to bully and harass those they see as less than themselves.
I had this conversation with a student a few months ago, you can't accept this behavior at home and expect people to magically change their behavior when they step foot on a plane.
Now, I don't believe parts of your story. Other Chinese getting on her, never seen that, ever. Others apologizing to you, that smells like BS. But, maybe you were on a flight with some sophisticated individuals. (I could be wrong on this)
The other question I have about your story is why would you wait for her to sit back down and confront her? The second she put hands on your bag you should have been up showing anger (barbarians only respond to aggression). Why not give her some firm pokes on the shoulder ? When a retard tries to cut in front of me and ignore me, that does the trick.
I now have great ideas for when travelling with people who show no respect for other passengers.
Other Chinese people were only beginning to show their annoyance and a few did tell them to hurry up because once the plane had landed and we were allowed to unbuckle our seatbelts, those two women took forever taking out their bags and checking the contents of them (maybe they had glass/ceramics etc…) at this point the other side of the cabin was already beginning to get off the plane. There was a long queue forming, perhaps some people had a connecting flight there were international passengers, a few Chinese women with foreign partners were grumbling.
Only one person apologised who was an elderly woman who sat next to me in the other aisle, she watched everything from the moment I sat down perhaps she wanted to say something in the beginning but didn’t so when we all stood waiting, I let her go ahead of me and she said ‘sorry about them’ because at that point a few people were rolling their eyes while those two women blocked the aisle taking out their bags.
Lastly why did I wait to say something to her in the end well because I thought that she would have the decency to put my bag back in, not for a second did I think someone would take it out and leave it on the floor which is why I didn’t know how to react. I will however respond with a firm poke to the shoulder or elbow to the gut if I sense this ever happening again.
You should have put her bags on the floor and put your bag back in
