Q: Treats you later regret avoiding...

When I first got here, I had a bad experience with preseved meats and the like, so I avoided all those hams and bacons in the supermarket. It was over a year later when a friend said I should eat his bacon (cos he was going away for a while, and it would go off in his fridge). I tried it. I liked it! I realised I'd missed out on that goodness (well, ok-ness) for all that time!!

I still can't yet convince myself to try those vacuum-sealed chicken legs and the likes...

In China, there are two things I do all the time.  First, I do always (at least) try everything available to eat once.  If I like it, I will eat it more, if I do not, or somehow harrmful to me, I will not repeat.  Of course, there are certain foods I will not touch but that is based on mental blocks, and nothing else like taste, etc.

The second thing I do is to check expiration dates on everything refrigerated.  Not only that, but I also look carefully for signs of decay due to lack of refrigeration.  And if I buy it, when home it must pass the nose test prior to cooking or eating it.  Here, employees and even some employeers, could not care less if expiration date has expired, or if someone removed it from cool display area and rested at another counter for hours or days.

Most days I eat for lunch a sandwich made with swiss cheese, ham, egg, lettuce, tomatoes and bacon.  So, I do use ham an d bacon a lot.  I never had a problem with either, but once I bought a block of swiss cheese that smelled lousy when I arrived home, and it was exchanged for me.

i do not know of a place in China that sells sandwiches, so I do make my own at home. just buy the ingredients as I see them, and sometimes do make my own bread, especially French bread.

Well, maybe this isn't a treat per se, but for a while I avoided any kind of leafy green because I didn't like them back home. However, after eating qing cai, I realized that I really liked it. Now it's one of my favorite vegetables.

I accidentally ordered bull frog in a restaurant the other day and it was delicious. I would not have ordered it if I knew what is was beforehand,  but I will definitely have it again.
