Firstly, trolls please stay away. Shoo to all of you. Next I have a legal question. My doctoral degree is in Public Admin with a focus on health and stats, so assume that makes me be qualified to teach 1:1 for GRE/GMAT/MCAT. But I don't have a work visa and have no desire to get one as I will only be in China for a month and a half. I was planning on doing this a few hours a week to help some colledge kids, kids who have the means to pay. Is it ok to tutor a few hours per week without any visa issues? What if I have the kids donate the money to a local NGO, would that prevent any legal problems?
Again, trolls stay away. I am seeking constructive and informative answers.
Thanks.

The 5 points were good, and thank you for them. But I was seeking more indepth info which I did eventualy get.
philbravery:
please think about your posts before you ask them and you will get on fine I now call a cease fire
This question is a bloody waste of time when the answer has been obvious for as long as I can remember.
Pathetic attempt.
You do not have the skills or qualities to be a teacher:
Your English is poor; you annoy people rather than gain their trust; you are very child like; you do not listen to what others say; you push your own point; you do not show respect for students or others; the list just goes on.
Additionally, teaching is a long term career, not just something to do to fill in a bit of time. Give it up.
Hey 'airyk' don't listen to these.. ehemm 'fools.' Do this my friend, teach as much as your like with your tourist visa. I applaud you sir! Just remember, as per Chinese law, you need to go to the local police station to register within 24 hours of arriving. So, when the bloke asks you "What are you doing here?" just reply "Teaching." And then... all shall be well my friend. Good luck with that!!
I'll answer your question straight up and won't attack you.
Yeah, you can teach 1 on 1 without a work visa -- or without any visa. It is, however, quite illegal. If you get caught, a few things could happen:
1) You get deported
2) You get deported and either banned from China for a long time, or forever.
3) You have to pay a bribe to the people who caught you.
It's like every other "crime" out there: as long as you don't get caught, you'll be fine. I'm not advocating that you break the law; I'm merely stating the truth. In fact, I'd advise against it.
MasqueX:
Bribes can solve most offenses here. If you get busted teaching, offer the cop 5000rmb, he'll probably forget he ever saw you. Maybe the blokes that get more trouble don't have the cash to pay their way out of their mess. Also, if you work for a company in China, the better connected your boss is, the less trouble you will have.
Hulk:
*with a deranged look in his eyes, Hulk rubs his palms together greedily while looking around shiftily*
And to add to all of the above... while having a PhD might make you qualified to get a Z visa, it doesn't qualify you to teach (other than your major).
This country is full of crap teachers, why would you want to add to the list??? (so, yeah, you should expect the bashing you're getting!)
airyk:
I am no longer planning on teaching. However I am offering free conversation hours. The first was today, we talked about international travel and the students seemed very appreciative to be able to practice with a native speaker.
