Q: Tutoring with a Tourist Visa

I came to China with a tourist visa to visit my girlfriend. Turns out she lives near a major university. I was offered a  GRE/GMAT tutoring job for 200rmb an hour. 5 hours per week. I don't have a work visa....so is this in anyway dangerous?

Here's a thought. Get a work visa, and work legally. Assuming you are qualified. If not, don't work illegally.

airyk:

I've only met a few foreigners in China, most were undereducated perverts using fake diplomas to get work visas. I think the only requirement to get a work visa here is white skin.

Miss A, I am sorry that I am not an English teacher. My English is sadly only about as good as every other native speaker who doesn't spend their life teaching English.

airyk: Here's another thought (I'm on a roll). How about you get a job in whatever field you studied, and leave the teaching to those that studied teaching? Your English skills are just not good enough to teach English at any level.

Even with the slightest modicum of common sense, you must realize that there are dangers involved. There's a reason why one is called a "Tourist Visa" and the other is called a "Work Visa". If you think that you can get away with it, that's your choice. I am not going to get drawn into that argument. But I am sure you know the answer to your own question.

Hang on, you're going to do exam prep classes? But you don't know it's TOEFL, not Tofel? Are you a qualified teacher? I hope so, because at exam prep level, students really need and deserve a qualified, committed and knowledgeable teacher to help them.

I told them I am not qualified for the Tofel, but I have a PHd so they insist that I could be of assistance. These are really rich kids after all. They also are very lazy and know next to nothing.

Ok I know there is a danger...but how serious is the danger? I have friends in other counties who have been there a decade on a tourist visa without any problems. Also I don't mean full time working.  Just a few hours here and a few hours there. If I wanted full time I would do it, but I would rather not work.

Traveler:

It's TOEFL. Miss A already told you. If you don't know that, you shouldn't be doing it.

Traveler, I might be unqualified for teaching toefl, given that I am not entirely sure what it is. However I am very overqualified for the rest. Please be sure to read the whole question and other answers before jumping to a conclusion.

No, you've said you have a PhD... in what? Candlemaking?? If it's not directly related to the English language, you shouldn't be teaching exam preparation! You are dealing with these kids' FUTURES!!! DON'T STUFF THOSE DREAMS UP!

If you're not really qualified to teach, then don't!

if you're not legal to teach, then don't!!

If you're actually qualified to teach, tell the university to get you your Z visa - simple! EXTREMELY simple!

Really, I don't see why this question has come up... PhD should grant an automatic Z visa - no questions asked.. (presuming you're from the 'right' country)

Okay, you want to work illegally, AND you've already ditched your girlfriend?

http://answers.echinacities.com/question/where-find-leftover-women?

Yes, you might have a PHD, but all that proves is that one doesn't have to have common sense to be educated.

Very clever, your a good detective. Thumbs up.  However you missed one vital piece of information. Sadly the post it was in is now gone. If you had all 3 you might see my "master" plan.

It confuses the brown stuff out of me why people come on forums asking if it is OK to do something that is blatantly illegal. There are no degrees of legality in the matter. It is either legal or illegal. Working on a tourist visa is illegal. Do you come on this forum hoping that other foreigners will give you permission to do it or forgive you?

Funny, I never see people posting on forums with such questions as "I don't have a drivers license but I only intend to drive a short distance so is it OK if I do?" or "What are the risks of driving without a license. Other people do it so is it such a big deal?".

If you are going to work on the wrong type of visa, just do it. There is no point asking peopl who do things legally. You will always get the same derogatory answers of them. You run the risk. You face the consequences if it turns sour on you.
