Q: Two questions regarding the 2008 Beijing Olympics

I am asking these so that I will know whether to bring up these issues, and how to react if others should bring them up.

1. I watched the Opening Ceremony with awe. Those watching with me were just as impressed. It was beautiful, intimidating, and professional. Is this an okay topic to discuss in China in mixed company, or not?

2. I was very impressed by the female gymnastic team. Each of those gymnasts deserved to be there. However, I realize that the "age issue" that arose cast an unfortunate shadow over the competition. Has this become a source of shame for the Chinese, or may I openly praise the team for the good job they did?

Thanks.

A simple answer

Like any other Question If in Doubt don't ask it

or if you really have to know ask it in a way that is respectful or not demeaning

so choose your word carefully and ask somebody you feel comfortable to ask

Philbravery has given you good advise.  When in China, if you feel any subject should be risky to discuss, then stay away from it.

And yes, I do agree that the 2008 Olympic Opening ceremony in Beijing was awesome and impressive.

And I also agree the  female gymnastic team was good and impressive.  And without stating anything about age, please allow me to explain how the Chinese way works in regards to "age", which is totally different as we do it abroad.

In China, everyone becomes a year older "officially" on New Lunar Year Day, not on your birthday.  Besides this, abroad you are (at birth) like "0" (zero) years of age.  In China, you are 1 year old the day you are born.

To illiustrate the point, assume a baby is born in China two days before New Lunar Year day on a particular year.  On that date of birth, the baby is "officially" one year of age.  Now, two days later is New Lunar Year Day.  And since everyone is one year older on that day "for the record", now that baby born only three days ago, it is "officially" 2 years old already.  This is why Chinese can get away with presenting 12 years old female gymnastics as 14 years old.

And that is done without any "alteration" of birth documents, which by the way is rather easy, because if you own the cookie jar and have the key to the lock too, you can eat all the cookies you want if you get my meaning.

The Olympic Committe is well aware of this, but in a way scared of making an issue out of it.

And that's why I've been 20 years old for 3 years straight!

Is this a wumao post?  "The opening ceremony was great can I talk about it?"  If you're criticizing it then why would you not be able to talk about it.  And then you go on and randomly defend Chinas gymnast team.  All this 4 years after the Olympics! Are you kidding me?  What, are you worried people are going to forget how  great your country was at hosting the Olympics now its getting close to the one in the UK?  FUCK OFF wumao. this is so obviously a propaganda post.

And HappyExpat can sod off to.  The Chinese are not a nation living under a rock, they are well aware how to count someones age as per the Olympics rule book.

The "birthday or age" scenario created by China is a hard one to swallow. I can't believe anyone would agree to that in the real world. It's a ridiculous concept any way you look at it.

Wow, Xunliang, you must have gone off bed on the worng side this morning.  Or maybe you are affected by the wumao fever too?.

Yes, because of the UK Olympics around the corner, it is normal to remember the Beijing one, and I am not scare of calling a spade by its proper name.  Their openning ceremony was second to none so far, they really outdid themselves.

And yes, their female gymnastic team is good, too bad they must resort to "tricks" to win more medals.  And if you want to claim that the Olympic Committe followed the rule book, well, do it.  It just say you must present proof of birth date with a birth certiifcate, and of course, the Chinese did.  But not from month, day and year as commonly done elsewhere, but by their own rules, thus presenting 12 years old as 14 years old gymnastics.  And the Olympic Committe should have the balls to call a spade too, but unfortunately, the politiciand there did not.

Now, if the truth bothers you, go take a shower !

Yes the olympic gymnasts on the female team were underage and they took the medals away from them afterwards. However, those female gymnasts although they were younger they still did take first place in the competition fair and square. I think the olympic committee had an age limit because of risks of injury and also I believe that younger athletes in gymnasts would be lighter and it would be easier for them to do the routines. I still would praise them because they did good although they weren't supposed to compete.
