Q: Umm...employees chatting on QQ during workday?

Still a little new to things here, but when I walk around the office I very often see chat boxes open on people's computer. Now even in the unlikely event that company employees use chatting software to communication, it's still unacceptable. I've told a couple of them off for it, but Chinese bosses at my level seem completely indifferent to it, and I get the impression I'm turning people against me by doing something I deem perfectly legitimate.

I don't care what they do during lunch time, but why is this type of behavior tolerated? I brought it up with my superior, who hemmed and hawed, agreed it wasn't right but then did nothing.

Welcome to China!

The people in my workplace also use QQ all the time, but it's a small concern next to the utter lack of logic displayed on a daily basis. The workplace sleeping is pretty awesome, too!

In their defense, QQ is used for sending work-messages occasionally, it's much better than any company intranet messenger system I've ever used.

For a white collar worker, being social and outgoing is more important than any other quality, especially for a man. Most businesses would rather go bankrupt than have the shame of some guy in the office not being outgoing and fashionable.

I have run companies here and even as the top boss, it is almost impossible to get them to stop using QQ.  They will always use excuses about how it helps them with their job and to communicate with other employees more effectively since they don't need to leave their desk, etc...

After a while, I decided to stop pounding my head against the wall and not fight the QQ monster.  Instead, I just developed stricter productivity rules and informed them that if their computers got infected by ANY virus, for ANY reason, I would deduct the repair cost and loss of productivity cost from their pay.  (We had a very strong set of anti-virus/worm procedures in place.)

Back in Puerto Rico, the secretarial staff were always stuck on FaceBook. Now, it was almost impossible to get them to do any work unless something was RUSH. Now, if they spent the entire day on Facebook we really could not do much. They were Union...

Monterey:

How can you spend all day on FB? Doing what? I go on, check some messages and log off..... I dont see how ppl can spend hours on there!

What time did you post this? Were you not at work and on this site?

Apparently its acceptable behavior here.  You will turn them against you if you keep pulling them up on it so just leave it.  Its not just your company, or the city your in, the whole country is doing it, so unless you want to set off on a doomed to fail campaign just forget it.  Pull them up on their quality or pace of work.

China has a vastly different mindset when it comes to work and priorities. It's that simple!

You're not going to change it - certianly not over-night.

Perhaps, if you link productivity to access of QQ (ie, doing a good job lets you have access to it), then you might see an improvement in work ethic. (or, they just  quit on you Tongue)

Not acceptable in the west.. acceptable here!

Alot of businesses use QQ as a formal avenue of communication, it isnt just the kiddy fad that it is in the west. Social networks penetrate life and business much more deeply here. They even put QQ number on the CV.

i bet you wrote this on your computer whilst at work.. As I am right now.

So stop being a douche!

I hope so or again, along with my napping, I'm going to lose my job. Actually, it shouldn't be allowed but we would have to fire every Chinese employee in China

I think you are a little bit overreacted. In China, most people use qq to deliver useful files ,exchange information and most of the time on business. If you do more research, you will understand the reason.
