Q: Undergo surgery here or back home?

A friend of mine is considering the option of undergoing a hysterectomy operation here in China, but she speaks no Chinese and still isn’t very familiar with China and how it works.

On the one hand, China is the more convenient option and I’m aware of the fact that most major cities have a few expat friendly hospitals which can be said to be up to Western standards.

On the other hand, this is China, not to mention the fact that she’d be bed bound for at least a week after the surgery, she’ll then have limited mobility for at least another month and so won’t be able to work. I do wonder about how she’s going to manage the logistics and day to day challenges regarding this, perhaps she could hire an Ayi. But in general, where would she start from?

Is doing it here a viable option or should she go back to her country to have it done?

The recovery period from a hysterectomy can be many months as my mother found many years ago.

What support network does your friend have here? Does she have enough savings to pay for the operation, after-care and lack of salary for many months?

TBH she might be better off having this operation done back at home where she might have a better support network and doctors / nurses she can communicate with.

kasuka91:

This is what I'm trying to emphasize to her, I personally think that it's better for her to have the operation done back home where she can recover with her family. She's leaning more to China because of the cost, not acknowledging the fact that there'll be extra costs regarding travel, general care and after-care as a result of her doing it in China.

Firstly - hysterectomy??? WTF????? Unless there's a pressing medical need for such a thing, it shouldn't be considered by anyone, anytime!!! ALL operations involve the risk of not waking up from it - and a hysterectomy is riskier than others (cos, you know, it's serious internal surgery on the torso).

Price is obviously a HUGE factor... both here and home... and anywhere else.

I presume this can't be done through insurance (unless it's a serious health issue). In which case, she'll be paying for it herself

You haven't said which is her 'back home', and therefore we don't know the health coverage she may enjoy (or suffer....).

I've been told that Thailand has a VERY good health system (better than China's), and is cheap compared to many other countries (suck as 'back home'). They also have many English speaking doctors and nurses. Obviously, if this becomes an option, do the research!

Yeah Shining is right this is very serious. The most imporant thing is having the support network to help in rocovery.

Hey, thanks for the help.

She's insured for China, and while the hospitals and facilities back home for her would be better, she would have to pay relatively high out of pocket expenses for it. However, it's just more the worry surrounding the quality and standards of the health facilities here in China and the fact that she lacks the same kind of support network here, when compared with China.

As for the hysterectomy, it needs to be done. She recently discovered a fibroid growing in her, and this will now be the second time that it's come about (she opted for a myomectomy for the former case).

Hotwater:

Shining. There are a number of reasons where hysterectomies are neede. I mentioned my mother earlier.

I didn't mention my you my youngest sister....who had to have a radical hysterectomy in her early 30's due to a rare form of cervical cancer that couldn't be stopped any other way. Took her 6 months to be fully fit and doing sports again.

So while i do understand your concerns, people don't agree to hysterectomies lightly.

@Hotwater - yes, I know. I wasn't suggesting "NO! Hysterectomy's are bad, m'kay...". Some people do take such things (relatively) lightly. Some get convinced that they should do a procedure 'because doctor knows best' - which may be complete crap (eg, C-sections here in China!)

I had a gf years ago who had a hyster, which was completely unnecessary, AND was screwed up by the doctor (left really bad scarring).

So, I'm not trying to attack the idea...

I'd rather place my genitalia in the hands of a madman with a pair of rusty scissors than I would freely go in to a Chinese hospital for elective surgery.

You'd have to be crazy or suicidal, or both.

The possible negative outcomes boggle the mind.

I already checked the cost with the help of my doctor friend who delivered our baby in Shenzhen, she said the surgery would cost 10,000 to 30,000 in major cities and this surgery is very common she said, not to worry if you have have help, love and support from friends in China to help you recover. What she said is that it's not surgery that you need to worry about, it's what caused it.

kasuka91:

Okay, thanks alot for checking mate.

For anyone who has serious experience with China and still asks this question, my answer is yes, go for it.

Shining_brow:

Now now... there are western doctors and good hospitals here as well!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
