Q: Update temporary residence permit every time you leave China?

What are the rules regarding leaving the country (on a valid multiple entry visa) with updating your temporary residence permit? Do you have to do this every time or only when you get a new visa, move etc? I'm a bit unclear on this, as my current temp residence permit says that I'm good through October 2013, but I've also heard that you need to go back to update every time.

Anyone know the rules on this?

Peter, if you are on a Z visa / residence permit, indeed every time you leave the PRC and return, you need to update the local registration information at the local police station (not the Entry-and-Exit folks).

If you are on an "L" visa, an "L" visa does not confer residency status, neither does an "F" business visa.  A student visa does, however, and you will need to reregister.

However, it is best to check with the local PSB folks as rules may vary or be applied differently from one place to another.

Thanks!

I'm just in the middle of doing that. I have had to update my local registration information at the same time as updating my visa for another 12 months. They said the rule came in on January 1st but methinks it was August. If I had left the country (which I plan to do in February)  I would not have been able to return regardless of my Z visa's validity. (I think I explained that right?)

On a related note, does someone on a twelve month multiple entry L tourist visa with 90 days stay allowed on each entry also have to re-register every time he/she re-enters the Mainland, for example from a day trip from Shenzhen to Hong Kong?

I checked this with the PSB in Nanning for a twelve month double entry L visa and was told that yes I had to register each and every time I come back into the country.
