Q: US and China announce plan to deal with climate change. Is this encouraging news?

It seems Washington and Beijing has come to a consensus about the environment and the climate.  I've been watching the comments by readers.  Some say China is smart.  Others criticize Obama.  What do you think?

sadly I think it is all back-slapping PR. and feel-good hot air that will do no more than contribute to the level of pollution in the world.

there may be a token gesture like the clean air in Beijing for the summit, but money talks and at the moment the money is in the get-rich quick manufacturing.

for those of you in Beijing, can you let us all know how long it takes for the air to become unbreathable again?

No, it is way to little way to late. The damage done to the planet will take 100000s of years to revert, as long as greenhouse gasses are pumped into the atmosphere we are heading for severe climate change.

If the CCP did what was needed, they would be sitting on the curb faster than you can get a bad stomach from streetfood. ... And I think the same would be the case for Obama. Two countries where the great masses are so determined to get what they think they deserve, can't do a thing about anything sensible.

jetfire9000:

This, considering the part that it is too little too late.  What were China's "promises" in the deal?  To begin curbing emissions by 2030?  Even without making some formal international agreement, China's emissions would be lowering just due to natural circumstances of their economic development model and changing demographics.  Their labor force will already be much lower than today's, meaning that they won't be expecting to be the world's factory base at that time anyway.  The Chinese side of the agreement was basically nothing in other words.

And sadly too, to me is is a bit too late, and too little to be accomplished in the next 15 years by people that will be out of office sooner than the dateline.

I would have loved to see more accomplished now or in the very near future. It can be done if it is really wanted.

America still sells low grade coal to China to provide energy for American multinationals.

Buisiness takes precidence over the environment unfortunately.

I agree with the above posters.  Even if Obama and Xi did have the needed resolve to start this task, it would quickly be watered down with partisan politics in the U.S.  Already, Republicans are scheming ways to block this agreement.  Anyways, as already noted, humankind has no real desire to make the needed sacrifices to clean up the earth.  This is way to little, far to late.  We will all choke in our own filth.

Talk is cheap - it's easy to make commitments but a lot harder to fulfill them when push comes to shove and business interests/ GDP trump environmental concerns.

 Don't miss comments:

'Chinese, who publicly spit on everything and anything, all the time, are offended by gum chewing..??

Right...

Chinese think they can do whatever they want being oblivious of other cultures and standards, this and the spitting while abroad, the loud talking, and even sometimes adults shitting on the street, when you ask them to stop because this is the US or Europe not China their answer is "You are racist!", but they play offended when someone chew gum in China...

China has an overcapacity in producing wind turbines and solar panels, they are looking to sell it.

The US expect Chinas growth to slow down by forcing them to care about the environment.

None of the parties truly cares about the environment itself.
