Q: US Background Check (Federal vs State)

I am currently residing in Washington. If I get a state background check is that good enough for getting the Working Visa (Whatever letter it is now).

Or do I need to get the Federal level FBI one, which would take several months apparently.

Thoughts and experiences appreciated

You can also get reliable info about US Criminal Check Certificate at Chinese Embassy. Here's one:

The problem is there is no clear and definitave answer.   Some people need it and some people dont.     Also depends which city you are in.   The local government has different rules.   My advice take it as you wish would be to get the FBI fingerprint one if you have no previous convictions.    If you have any previous convictions some of the localities will frown on it, even if was just reckless driving,  dui,   ya da ya da.   If you have any convictions and it was a long time ago.   I would just go to my local county courthouse and ask for a criminal background check with no convictions on it say last 5 or 10 years.   That is my suggestion,  hope it can help out.

It is really anyone's guess right now as its still a relatively new requirement in most provinces.  Like someone said above, some people need the FBI one and for others the state level  one will do.  That is the real truth.  I used a state level one and it worked here and have heard others did it as well.  However, I've heard others say you need the FBI one in other parts of China.  Do some research into the particular province and city you are going and see what they say or just ask your potential employer who is sponsoring you to ask them.

If you are a California Resident, you can have your finger prints taken and sent into the Criminal Justice Department just as you can with the FBI prints.  I am planning on getting around state and federal criminal background check.

You can mail in the forms and get your cbc.
I just got mine from from Oregon where I lived for a few years.
