Q: Using StackOverflow in China

StackOverflow is a question/answer website for programmers, which became *THE* place to ask questions. It's a really great tool.

Unfortunately, StackOverflow have links to many blocked sources in China (Google API), making it close to unusable. My VPN allows me to read questions, but not logging in (VPN mangles URLs in a way that breaks the login process), so I can't post questions or answers. For now, I'm stuck with a programming problem, and the *ONE* place where I can get answer is unusable.

Someone managed to get StackOverflow working through their VPN (ie. being able to login and ask questions) ?

The VPN mangles URL?

Is it working through your browser only or system-wide?

Never heard of that, but if you are free to use another browser, you might want to try thor. Not for anonymity but for an alternative.

If this doesn't work (probably won't), you might want to try IRC. IRC is also a great source of help and discussions for tech nerds and programmers (try freenode, there WILL be a channel for your programming language... there is a Fortran channel. I checked.).

It's working through the browser... It's not the best choice technically, but it's wife-compatible ^^

Another similar site I know of is http://www.experts-exchange.com/. The site seems unblocked, but I have not tried asking a question on it in China though.

At the risk of sounding highly condescending, unless your programming question is really complex, I guess a stackoverflow (or bing) search could provide you some clues in the right direction? I believe a google search would be much better though, but alas!

DrMonkey:

Expart Exchange is not nearly as good as Stackoverflow... Stackoverflow have a clean, uncluttered design, you don't need membership or crap like that just to find an answer, and the community is better. For example, for Python, you will find all some of the main developers of Python there.

I could login into stackoverflow using the free fqrouter app on my android phone. It takes me to the ask a question page without issues.
