Q: Visa Work Permit Question

So a friend of mine who lives in Harbin has a question. She has never worked in China she just lives there with her husband on I assume a Q visa. She wants to know if she can still apply for a work permit in or around China?...like in HK or another country. She claims she has all the documents needed. Like criminal record and degree authenticated ect...She just wants to know if she has to go back to her home country of Canada to apply for it? Or can she apply for in it in China? She wants to know before she starts looking for a job teaching English. I think if she has to go back to Canada to get it, she  says she is just going to wait until she goes back for a vacation.

I assume some people on here have gone through something similar...anyone know? I know you use to be able to go to HK and get it done, but some people say you cant no more and some say you still can... Anyone know for sure?

After the WP started they said Q visa holders could convert their Q visa in to a WP and Working Resident permit, theres no reason to use the term Z visa here as thats just the invite visa that allows you to come in and get the working resident permit started, either way it'll work even going to HK now is ok again as long as you have the right doc's ready you'll have no problem getting your working permit card and working resident permit visa.

Thanks for the info, Would it be possible for her to get it done in the mainland?..or do you still need to go to HK? But thanks for the info again...a lot of contradictory info about this subject online.

Its best for her to find the SAFEA office, they have a Q/A desk, example in Shenzhen its desk 25 or 26, Futian district. Something else other people don't know is that SAFEA has changed the whole office system now and so more relates to SAFEA for any of us wishing to work here rather than the company or PSB, so its best for her to walk in and ask, they will speak English because its Q&A desk and ask about the Q, than tell the new company that SAFEA gave the OK and get started with the WP card, I changed jobs last year and all companies told me my security check needed to be from America, but I have been in CHina over 11 years, so I asked SAFEA face to face and they said a Chinese check was fine, see my point? Don't trust the HR in companies to care or actually know what they are talking about, if I would have listened to them i would have lost or 20,000 RMB.

If SAFEA says no which they shouldn't but again it depends on the city, than Hong Kong will work fine. They need us so much, we have a huge shortage now.

She'll most likely have to go home for the first Z visa/WP. At least that was earlier policy (2016), which I doubt it has changed.

You can also get right A through Visa Agencies in China especially about HK Z pick-up ...

Updated Z visa procedure:

Procedures of work & residence permit application:

Step 1. Document collections and applicaiton preparation

Step 2. PtC Applies for a working license

Step 3. PtC Applies for a for a visa notice

Step4. With above 2 documents, employee has to visit HK (Note: in some cities of China, Visa authority doesn't accept employess to visit HK get a 1 month Z visa, you will have to return bakc to your home country with the VISA NOTICE to get 1 month Z visa from Chinese embassy, please double check with with PtC before heading for Hong Kong) to get a 1 month Z visa

Step 5. After back to China with the Z visa, PtC will apply for 1 year work permit

Step6. PtC applies for 1 year residence permit for the employee (Note: Due to the security reason, during the procedure, applicant might be asked to show up once at local visa office to take a picture there.)

Thanks for the info, so it boils down to what city or province that you are applying for a job in if you can get one in HK? hmm..still seems hard to find a straightforward answer.

Most of the people who know the A, they experienced it last year first time.

I guess, best way to find out would be to contact potential employer. Or just send job applications to Schools in Heilongjiang and see what they say about it.

Have a look at Dave ESL Cafe, China Board. You might find fresh A about HK Z pick-up there.

I'd say, count as almost certain she'll be required to return home and apply for Z at Chinese Embassy there.

Send an email to both Visa agencies above. You'll get the right answer there!

Seems you still can get it in HK with this company http://www.fbt-chinavisa.com.hk/index.html I read some post that people have been getting them from there after July of 2017. So i guess if you use an agent in HK you can get it done as long as you have all the proper documents.

I had to get a new Z-visa in 2015 when transferring job even though I already had a work permit (long story!)

New job was in Guangzhou. I was able to apply in Hong Kong instead of going back to the UK. The reason, I was told, was because I was already resident in China. If your friend is on a family visa then she’ll already have a resident permit so should be able to apply in Hong Kong.

biggj123:

Although since she has never had a job in china before would that matters? Im not sure. I told her to email this HK travel agent to find out for sure...she is canadian so she might be able to.

I think she should be okay as she already has a resident permit (you said she was already here with her husband on a Q visa).

I had a Q2 visa. I was sent to HK to get a Z visa. they canceled my Q2.
Now I will go get my Work visa tomorrow. It cost 1,240  rmb for Express (48 hrs) service

considering that my Q2 cost $120 cdn for 7 years, it may be cheaper to stick with the Q2 visa.
