Q: Wal-mart in China?

Wal-Mart says they plan to open 90 stores in China by the end of next year.
90 stores!Well, that makes sense.
I guess they figure they might as well open stores in China. That's where all the stuff is made.

Ta dum dum! Laughing out loud

Think its gonna be as big as hit as KFC?

I don't know if it will work, because everything here in China is so cheap! In Canada, I would often go to Walmart because the pricing is very advantageous and I can buy almost everything there. Here in China, markets have pretty much everything I need, plus it's more pleasant to discover! I really doubt Walmart can rival markets and the cheap prices, so I'm sure it'll eventually fail.

7 years ago, when I was in college, we (my friends, classmates, roommates) only bought stuff in Wal-mart, and I loved it. Wal-mart is really big in some cities in North China, like Chuangchun where I went college.
And If we can have more Wal-mart in Shanghai than Carrefour that will be great!

In the Great White North of Nunivik, we do not like Walmart,, they operate sweat shops in China, pay their employees peanuts, won't let them unionize. Thier merchandise is low price, when they open a new store many mom and pop businesses fail. Some businesses will survive because Walmart will attract shoppers to the area.
I'm not a fan of all the stores getting bigger and bigger. No sales service help, too much walking. The stores have to be more expensive to maintain,,, so who really pays for the store? YOU
And stores in general now carry mostly casual clothing. It is hard to find nice clothes, another by-product of these stores. We had casual Fridays,, now casual every day. I only know one woman that I see wear dresses to work and she is hot. But other than her, I can't remember seeing any women any where wear dresses. Thanks Walmart

Here in Nanchang is my first experience with walmart in china. The prices are the cheapest in china, and they allow you to return items the same as you would in usa.

THEY WILL DO THE SAME AS THEY ARE DOING IN THE US, Killing OFF SMALL BUSINESSES

but here in china people are slaves to tradition and slow to adopt new ideas. so that will help small markets for a generation or 2

to euser: you clearly are ignorant. if you want to stop trade between china and the outside world, lets do it, china is the one who will lose. China has gained much wealth and jobs while europe usa australia and canada have lost jobs and wealth

@crimochina, Are you joking?, Quote: "The prices are the cheapest in China" I live in China from many years and i can tell you for sure that Wall Mart (Sam's Club) has huge prices for the food. The difference between them an a Chinese market is somewhere around 35%, so how to be the cheapest price in China? Do you make shopping just in the markets with imported food???

GuilinRaf:

I have had much better luck in Guilin and in Beijing. While it definitely is catering to the Chinese and even regional tastes I always manage to find something from "home".

Chinese people do believe that Walmart is cheaper whether it really is or not. Despite what they are as a company, they provide a cleaner super market experience than the local fare but are easily beaten in foreign foods (which are usually on their 3rd floor, in the import section) by CarreFoure and Metro.
