Q: Is Wang Jianlin only rich because his dad hauled Mao's fat arse to Yan'an in a sedan chair?

Or does he have actual entrepreneurial talent?

I think I already know the answer but I can't understand Chinese very well so I can't tell if he is a genuinely talented entrepreneur. There are lots of hong er dai who are far less successful than him, so maybe he's got something the rest of them don't.

What is that?

I used to work in a Wanda owned hotel in Sanya.  It was said to be his favorite hotel and he came often, so i've met him a few times.  As a person he was surprisingly grounded.   He seemed to actually understand the value of money, and wasn't unnecessarily vulgar or flash.  He treated the staff like actual human beings, as opposed to other moderately rich Chinese who treated the staff like dirt who were bellow them.

So to address your question, I would say he does have entrepreneurial talent.  I think this personal touch is the difference between the Chinese mega rich (Wang Jianlin, Jack Ma etc..) and the masses or moderately rich arseholes.

Oh don't get me started on his son.  I have so many stories we could be here all day.  He was a mixed blessing for the hotel.  He would spend insane amounts of money, almost enough to single handedly make the hotel profitable.  But at the same time terrorize the place.  Stopping him for affecting the other guest was at times challenging.  Interestingly though, whenever he and his father were there at the same time he would be on perfect behavior, and turned into a quite little daddy's boy.

He's got to sort that kid of his. I'm sure the watches on the dog has caused people to begin to ask the same questions I'm asking right now.

Its quite common for the sons/daughters of extremely wealthy to be spoiled brats. Even Grandsons and granddaughters too. Nothing new.
