Q: Want to come to a birthday party at a KTV?

How about a party for a five-year-old?

My boys were invited to a birthday party for one of their classmates. The party was at a KTV. Now, I understand that is probably where the mother met her husband (as in the norm where I'm living) but really, a KTV for a five-year-old's birthday party?

The mother came to her senses, or realized that she didn't want all of the other mothers to meet their exes, and changed the venue to McDonald's.

I know my outlook is ultra-conservative and old-fashioned, but a KTV party for a five-year-old?

The TV is often on CCTV 3 or the regional variant, where they watch seductive performances by scantily-clad dancers, usually underage. Well, my home gets dominated by children's cartoons, but I imagine the average Chinese household watches what the adults want.

The kids will see the KTV women as rather dull and passive, but otherwise be oblivious of their purpose in the establishment.

It's us men who get thoughts in our heads when we see women in that context. Not that we are solely to blame, but I just mean to say that women in many places can entertain children and men in different contexts at different times.

Masseuses
Au pairs
Hairdressers
Private teachers
Secretaries
KTV hostesses...
wherever there are pretty ladies, there are men who want them and some girls who welcome it for profit. Doesn't mean the professions are bad, but the more it happens the bigger the stigma. It's our impressions that deem them unfit to cater to children - we forget the different contexts.

Am I naive in thinking it was just going to be karaoke with children's music and maybe a cake? Or was it going to be real KTV with booze, smoking and ladies of the night? You can't rule out anything in China, I guess.

Like mentioned above it depends on the type of KTV. I doubt the woman was planning on having a childrens party in a underground brothel. There are a lot of family friendly KTVs that cater to young children. If you went you would have been stuck listening to Chinese nursery rhymes all day. Or more likely the dads would have gone into another room and drank heavily.

No excuse. KTVs suck period.

Sure some will say... but there are different kinds... and that is true.

But can you imagine everyone having to little to 5 year old kids yelping Celine Dion songs for hours on end.

Only pure torture can come from a setup like this... PURE TORTURE!

???

KTV for 5 year old is totally normal from Chinese perspective...

A birthday party?!?!

What the hell is that??? Are they really going to buy the kid a cake??

Come on man, that's horrible, a cake for birthday?!?!

NO!!! We eat noodles for birthday!! Noodles are long so the kid will have a long long long lifespan!!

You need to correct the parents and save the kid from dying young, seriously, this is sooooo wrong!!!

As for I me I don't think its a terrible idea. Depends on the KTV of course. I've been to couple of them. There are some nice and youngsters friendly. I haven't seen young children though. There are separate rooms with tvs, sofas.. why not?  You can buy fruits, juices... bring your cake. Kids can watch cartoons, play games, sing some songs..  No one would smoke. Mums can relax and not being scared that kids would be lost. In some KTVs there are even private bathrooms.  And it is not mandatory to pick KTV-girls there.

I just think that mum wants to have some fun and to sing songs by herself. and kids at that age don't care too much where would be the party, they just want a party and presents.

I can remember being 5 although it was a long time ago. If I were 5 years old and having a birthday I'd want water fights, video games, junk food and friends. I'd definitely not want to be stuck somewhere watching boring music videos. Kids in China get a raw deal. They get wrapped in cotton wool and mollycoddled. They never seem to have any fun and are endlessly doing homework or taking extra lessons. This all sounds like a sure fire way to create perpetual children ala Michael Jackson.
