Q: Was Zhang Yimou fine enough?

It just came out that Zhang Yimou will have to pay 7.5 million yuan for breaking the one-child policy rules. Do you think it was a fair amount?

Seems like a lot, but then there are all those poor women, who are forced to have abortions because they can't pay for them.

If women can have forced abortions I don't know why they cannot chop of his pecker.

I cannot comment on the amount. I believe having children is a basic human right, despite the fact that it is screwing up the planet. The fact that a guy has money should not be the reason for him flooding the planet with his offspring.

The size of the amount would be tough for a farmer. Fines in China often have no meaning as they are tailored so the farmer can handle a traffic violation without having to sell his wife (for that reason) So the middle/upper class can ignore the laws. This amount is probably set based on the man's wealth. This amount is probably also set to make a point to others, and thus perhaps unfair. I am pretty sure there isn't any written law-document about the punishment for not following this law.

Note. Women are paid to have abortions in some rural areas, as the family planning people have quotas to meet, so to perform their job they need to find "victims" by paying them.

Seen from the big cities, the OCP is not that bad. Seen from poor people in the sticks perspective, it is effed up beyond comprehension.

The fine makes him look like a typical rich guy who can buy what he wants. So no amount is enough.  The one child policy didn't work and will never work. He is a good example of that.  What it has done is make China's economic future look dismal. with 1/3 of the population at retirement age by 2030, how will the government support any social programs.  History has shown that, in general, the wealthier a nation becomes, the less children are produced. Growth in those countries is fueled by immigration. At this point in history I don't see to much immmigration to China.

I agree with your point, by China is probably not at the development level where the birthrate per woman would have been at western level had it not been for the OCP, also, there is less and less undeveloped world to import people from

I am offended that Zhang Yimou betrayed us Chinese people by skirting the one-child policy. How dare he? No, this fine is not enough; he should've been fined 90% of his current bank account.

I'm really sick of all these law breakers in China. Me and my 6 children will not stand for this!
