Q: watching the World Cup on Chinese TV?

have been in China for quite a few of the major football tournaments and had to cope with 3am kick offs for most of them. This time a lot of the games have been on at earlier kick off times. However, watching games on CCTV 5 during this World Cup I have noticed a few things that to me are classic Chinese 'us and them' mentality. For a start, the match commentators usually sound like two mates talking business in a bar, they rarely say the players names when a pass is made and never shut up talking crap. The have never mentiond VAR once despite their love for acronyms (App being the best example!). Have also noticed that teams were referred to as  'waiguorens' (saying waiguorens in a World Cup!!!) not the actual nationality e.g. Faguoren and also the players names are not even pronounced properly. For example for the Belgium striker Lukaku they seem to think it should be pronounced Loo_Car_Koo.

Professional broadcasters should AT LEAST get the pronounciation of the players name right.

Something else as well - kick off times on CCTV 5 seem to be about 2 minutes ahead of the actual source they are getting it from....in Russia?! It is also dubbed over and has a poor sound quality with Chinese language on screen for team names.

China could be cool and do things the same way as everyone else but as usual they have to do it differently.

Je, Je, Je.

First, I am grateful to CCTV 5 and China Unicom for providing me with free game views.

AND SECOND, AND MOST IMPOTANT, what do I do?.

Since I do wacth the games on Internet, I get CCTV-5 first on my computer, and kill the sound.  Then, open a page on a new window, and get, also on Internet, the BBC radio broadcast of the game.  Then sit back and enjoy the show with commentators that "make sense", and yell "GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!.

Think youre being a little harsh. At least we can watch it. Its a shame vpns dont work fast enough to warch in my from my own country. Whod have thought commentary made adifference.

One thing does annoy me. They offer an extended replay on cctv5 which is great. Means i can avoid staying up till 2am. However they always put the score on the page you have to click om so,there is no avoiding it. After that i cant ge bothered watching, only will watch short replay.

though unlike you i dont understand chinese. So maybe it would be more annoying
