With the storm came about 2mm of rain. So what, I hear you say....well, we're on the edge of the Gobi Desert and Jungaer Basin.....it NEVER rains here. And now the cloud formations and slowly descending sun, combined with stunning acuity, is wonderful. Everything seems so fresh.
Living in China has its trials and tribulations, and I know I let my frustrations leak quite a bit. But sometimes I feel fortunate to be living here.
It's paradoxical in the extreme...I'm so free and no other bastard can say the same thing. In spite of all the negatives here, life feels good.
And today we got the green light for Temporary Resident visas for my wife and stepdaughter.
I splurged by buying a Y100 bottle of dry white and cooking potato and leek soup with a ham hock in my new slow cooker.
You should see these clouds...woah, is that Royce Hart I can see up there???
So, Chinese expats, how's your day going?
Glad to hear you had a good day man. I also had a good day. Weve had rain non stop, mix it with 35 degree heat and 98% humidity=hell. But today was a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky. I swear i saw some blue. Not humid at all. I even left the office to take a nice walk. Left the office early and for some impossible reason, trafic was great! Nothing special happened at all, but with so many bad China days, the little things count.
Cheers!
good day here too
it rained on Sunday so the place is still quite fresh.
although it is hot, there is a lovely breeze Not a steady one, but gusts of wind, just as I like.
The students were on form and had some great discussions today.
Should i buy a lottery ticket ???
The best days in China are the rainy days.
Here in Suzhou, 35c, quite humid, with a brown haze on the close horizon. I went running in the evening, my wife following on a bike. I picked some empty plastic bottle on my way to put them in the trash. Nice sunset on Dushu lake, and only 3 peoples shouted "LOL KAN KAN LAOWAI PAO BU. YI ER YI ER HAHABAHAHA". I don't exaggerate, that's the true count. I ran a bit faster, to burn the anger off. Once home, I felt my lungs were really burning, deep inspiration are painful. Exactly like when I smocked way way too much during a party. Silly me, I did not check the pollution index before going to run : 600, 10 times the "dangerous" level according to the OMS. Beginner's error. Maybe the aircon running all over the place are pushing the coal-fired power plants to the max. Who knows, never one investigation or official explanation. China, I want to like you, but you don't make it easy.
DrMonkey:
Note : I stopped to smoke 3 years ago, so no, it's not my smocking which burnt my lung. That's the air which too noxious for life as we know it
bill8899:
Yes I saw the AQI for Suzhou, it was @ 600. Crazy numbers. Hope you are OK.
Josch:
Here take my like for running in this smoggy weather fellow Suzhouren. :)
DrMonkey:
Here's the air pollution graph for the 3 last days, in Suzhou. Note the nice correlation between temperature, ozone levels and PM10 particles levels (ie. strong indicator of coal-fired plants exhaust)

Nice weather here recently,
Went on a motorcycle drive to pick up my wife then take a look at the apartment my brother in law is buying and then the apartment we are buying across the street in a different residential area.
I was happy to see the quality wasn't bad and the greenery and water they are putting in around the buildings is what they SAID they would be putting in (so funny how when people do what they say, you get so happy in China).
So that lifted my spirits because I am used to being disappointed. Looks like the Chinese are starting to understand the importance of parks, water and not just big flat stupid concrete plazas. That and I didn't kill myself on my motorcycle... so it was a good day!
My God you all sound so Mary Poppins.
royceH:
And that can't be anything but good. You know, a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.....in the most delightful way.
bill8899:
Oh God no. OK, touche, sir. Now I must listen to some metal to get her awful voice out of my head.
I remember being happy the very few times it would rain in Beijing.
Then I moved to Brittany, which has the same reputation as Great Britain when it comes to the weather...
I'll be enjoying a cold beer in Beijing's suffocating heat (and air) in two weeks, I can't wait.
royceH:
You mean you can get cold beer in Beijing?? But Beijing's in China, right? I didn't know cold beer was possible in China. Must be at some radical, anti sino whacko joint. Be careful.
