I have cancelled my renting in Shanghai before I come back to home and will move into international hostel for couple of weeks before I found a new apartment. But I have found out the mixed room(girls and guys live in the same room) is cheaper usually. Is that weird to live in the same room with guys?
Also I have got some worries with the security there as I had met a very bad Chinese guy beating me in one hostel because I called him bad name after he was rude to me.He was in the same room with me at that time.
I have no interest in living in a hostel for long term now.Just for temporary.
PS:If any of you have a room to rent in Shanghai, message me.
"Weird" is all a matter of perception. It's relative. From one country's perspective, or one person's perspective, something might be weird, when it might not be weird to other people, or other country's.
For many Westerners, it's not considered weird (when I traveled in Europe, I shared mixed hostel rooms).
I don't think sharing a mixed dorm is weird. I do find weird is the paranoia about sharing a mixed room.
No. What is weird is living in a hostel for several weeks.
what's the price difference calculated per night? If it isn't much I would pay extra for all-female dorm. no sense making yourself uncomfortable if the price difference is minimal.
as far as it being weird, it's not weird at all for Westerners... dunno how Chinese feel about it though.
staying in a mixed room with men you don't know, i'm pretty sure, is very weird in western countries. in fact i'm pretty sure no girl would ever do it. very unsafe. you'd run into trouble sooner or later. most men would be gentlemen but it just takes one weirdo to cause you problems.

I agree.I met a weirdo before. While that guy was beating me.no man helpped in that room. The hostel boss is a woman, she seem has something with that guy.She told me to not call policeman, otherwise she will not let me live there.I choosed to call the policeman anyway.I am sick with that weird hostel. People there are just so afraid to help when a man is beating up a girl. Most Chinese and foreign men are coward. When the policemen come to get proof from other guys, they lied to the policemen and told that weird guy did not beat me for their own sake. But I met many women live in mixed rooms.Usually young women. The policemen told it's illegal to have male and female live in the same room in China and surveyed the hostel a bit.I love the policemen, they helpped me a lot and they forced the hostel to give me a single room to sleep before I leave on Tomorrow.

Ms Strawberry, I have asked this question of you before ......are you on medication or just on drugs?
Just checked with one hostel. It costes 80rmb for a bed in Jing an temple of Shanghai.Won't that being ridiculous?
meiduo:
You mean its too expensive? In Beijing its 100+ and Guangzhou around 60-70.80rmb in shanghai is not really expensive.
It's not weird.if you feel uncomfortable why not go for all female room, the price difference is not too much and sometimes its the same price.
it would be safer to stay at a shower house, in jinan they have seperate shower, tv lounge, gameroom for men and women, the shower is 48rmb and you stay upstairs sleeping in a recliner in the tv room for the night.
i met a guy who lived there with his clothes in a locker for 5 weeks because china mobil transferred him to jinan but did not help him with any relocation costs, my wife met a lady who had lived there 2 months waiting for the key to her new apartment after they said it was ready and it wasnt ready.
not sure about shower houses or costs in shanghai, someone can probably find out.
Back in my backpaking days, being a student short on money, I went for the mixed common rooms all the time. Other times, I would share a double bed room with an other backpacker, which sometime was a woman. This kind of deals allowed me to travel for a whole month on a small budget.
I never felt weird about it, it allowed us young tramps to travel and see the world. Sleeping next to a woman never make me feel entitled to jump on her, I'm not a monkey... ho, wait a minute... hahem. I've shared hotel rooms with female backpacker, it was fine, we slept in our respective beds, didn't peek for a chance of boobs, no fluids were exchanged. That's called "being an adult". That includes consensual sex without string attached, but it never happened in those circumstances.
I don't do it anymore, because I travel with my wife now, and we can afford to preserve our intimacy.
Are you back in Shanghai yet Strawberry?
You must be settled into your mixed dorm by now.
But here is a serious suggestion. Why not get a job in a western owned factory. Lots of good jobs in factories you know. It's not all assembly line stuff. It's a good place to learn your trade if you want to import/export. The money can be good too.
And, you can get a bed for free in their dorm if you need it.
Strawberry66:
How much would you think that they can pay me?I already make around 7K with all good insurances covered. Chinese make less than westerners in China.I had tried interviews with many western companies, they pay little money like 5K. Factories usually are in the outskirt of Shanghai. It not worth trying if the payment isn't really high. My focus in this year is to hunt a bf,I am not going to a place rarely can see one white man.Well,if the payment is up to like 12K at least,I can get taxi to come to the downtown more often. I have no interest to find a bed in a factory dorm, dorm is just for short term.I need private space for myself.

I am still at home.I have no plan to sleep in a hostel bed for such a long time as I did before.
