I was surprised to find out that Trivium (noisy thrash metal band) are huge here, as are similar metal bands in general. Also I don't get the whole Sarah Brightman/Kenny G thing. I'd literally never heard of them before I came here and it turns out they're huge.

Eminim is popular for a rapper. When I went to shenzhen and stayed near the beach they had a party going on in the wee hours of the morning and the only song they played were eminim's songs. Other than that Celine Dion!
Justin Bieber is popular EDIT: amongst Chinese teens.

Ok travler now I know you are a 13 year old girl!! s) you could have just told me instead of bugging me this whole time!!
Nightwish (not that is was so popular, but you don't expect to hear that in China)
Shining_brow:
I don't know why you got thumbs down for that! So I did my bit to balance it!
And, yes, I was blown away when I had a student in my class who liked NW... and, oddly, straight after that class, on my way back to my unit, they played NW over the uni loudspeakers.. he swears he had no connection to that, and it was pure coincidence!
My ex- (Chinese) gf likes them a lot, too!
Mr. Big is big here. No, seriously. And they're pretty damn good and put on a great show.
I'm not that surprised about Trivium. In China it seems most like syrupy pop, then tastes skip right on over to thrash metal like Trivium.
Maybe I should learn some Trivium songs.
I've seen a girl around here who wears a Motley Crue t-shirt! (although, apparently, she's got no idea who they are :( )
Shining_brow:
Oh, and there's quite a few The Who t-shirts around as well...

Kickstart My Heart is still one of my favorite Rock Band songs. I don't care that my voice doesn't go that high, damn it, let me sing!
Vitas.
Don't worry, I also wondered who the heck that was when I first saw him on tv here.
The other day one of the young girls from our copy room was listening to an old Suede album. I was very surprised...and impressed.
OwainLW:
Suede! They're from my hometown. The lead singer grew up just down the road from me and all their songs are about growing up in dull, conservative provincial towns. They've come to China a few times and have just released a new album. Dunno if they're touring here with it though. Dog Man Star!
MondoRosa:
Their first self-titled album (the one the young girl was listening to) is a classic. I don't know how much it would resonate with me today but it meant a hell of a lot to me when I was eighteen/nineteen. It gives me hope for the youth of China because a Chinese girl choosing to listen to that album is sooooo out of the ordinary.
I meet a lot of girls who like Linkin Park, for some reason...
Actually, one that I'm surprised about, is that' Me first, and the gimme gimmes' hasn't been #1 for the last 10 years straight....
