I find it hard to believe why a population of over a billion can not find 22 men to qualify them to the world Cup? It still beats my imagination.
China's Football Association is a source of amusement and shame for many Chinese people. It is famous for being utterly and irredeemably corrupt.
China can't organise a soccer game without at least twenty people being paid match-fixing fees. Consider the number of players, coaches and managers in a soccer team. What are the chances that that many Chinese people could all be persuaded not to cheat? Zip.
If you google China corruption soccer you will get a lot of stories.
e.g. http://shanghaiist.com/2009/04/24/chongqing_cheats_return_soccer_titl.php
China participates in an international middle school soccer tournament. But instead of sending middle school girls it sends professional soccer players. Wins international tournament (because, playing against actual middle school girls). Gets caught. Refuses to give back trophy. Way to go, China.
Robk:
Hahahaha... they don't even look like middle school students... how low can you go?
I dunno, ask China.
Cricket:
You are absolutely correct Sam. Corruption is the problem. There is no lack of football talent in China.
icnif77:
I disagree with your statement! However, I vote 'up' O2
I think something is wrong with their accessories (Apple ol--nine store)! They all run after one ball! Why?
When I was kid, we all had each one ball (and visible 6-packs, too O2)O2
Shining_brow:
"Titan, China's biggest sports newspaper, reports in its online edition (here in Chinese) that the school will keep the physical trophy, as a reminder of the shame of the incident."
Yeah, sure - you can bet they tell every visitor who sees it about their 'shame'!!!
NoTime2Lose:
Sad but true - Sam nailed it. With all the talent China has to choose from they could field one helluva a competitive team if not for the "C" word.
expatlife26:
And that is this country's Achilles' heel. Put their energy into cheating instead of being good.
Then when they can't cheat they can't compete.
yes corruption is a factor but China makes it in nearly everything else and blitz the summer Olympics so it comes back to:
they are not good enough
The women's team however is one of the world's best.
I witnessed a football game in Beijing in the Workers Stadium.
although not a fan, i enjoy a good match and skillful play.
This is not what is saw.
another time the local team played a visiting English club.
talk about being outclassed
1.4 billion people
not even 1 good team that can play in a non-fixed match
What are the official reasons ? Honest question, I really don't know. To me Qatar doesn't make much sense either and it's hardly a rumor anymore they won it through corruption.
I mentioned before in another thread that China in general tends to fail at team sports.
China has the largest pool of talent for any sport and as Korea proved many times, even Asian have the endurance and speed to succeed at soccer. If they can get past organizational corruption, China could be in FIFA playoffs within 10-15 years. It will be a real challenge to overcome the collusion issue though.
maybe China should start playing Rugby, wont be good at that either The All Blacks are the best in the world
I think the Chinese football is in a good position right now to improve a lot and improve quickly. More and more young kids are following football and want to play so the grassroots organisations are improving and the quality will gradually improve. Guangzhou won the Asian Champions League last year which also did a lot for Chinese football as they played in the club world cup and didn't fair too badly against Bayern Munich, the best club team in the world right now.
They have some young players coming through and they are getting bigger names coming to play in the CSL. That's not including Drogba and Anelka who played for Shanghai for one season, that was a farce by a rich, excentric but crazy owner. Allessandro Diamianti, a good Italian player, just started playing for Guangzhou and there are a lot of good Brazilians in the league.
China also just qualified for the Asian Cup in Australia next year which will play a roll in football development. Showing those games on TV and if China can get one or two good results then the mood surrounding the team will get better and people will be excited to play.
I think it will take time but they're getting there. They now have a former world cup winning coach, Marcelo Lippi (Italy 2006) coaching Guangzhou Evergrande, and they have Sven Goran Erikson (former England coach) coaching Guangzhou R&F. So it's coming along. I hope I'm still in China in 5 or 10 years when they are better and playing top opposition. Might take longer though.
Chinese culture is the number one obstacle. In team sports you must be unselfish, think on the fly, work hard (not just long hours or not finding a shortcut). You must also be open to accepting criticism.
I think football was never a tradition in China before and just now it becomes more and more popular. China build modern training centers recently for future football stars. Some foreign coaches Marcello Lippi and Sven Goran Ericsson are coaching in China now and they stated that their football teams built football school that could be put in the top of the World class and that Chinese kids are starting to like and train football since the young age.
Population doesn't mean anything when it comes to talent and quality. I remember the World cup from 1998 that was held in France. Croatia kicked out Germany and got to 3rd place. I suppose many of you never heard about Croatia or if you heard about it, you don't know where is it exactly. Croatia has less population than Germany has registered football players.
After I conducted lengthy research on this subject (puzzling, I know!), I think main reason for Chinese 'no FIGA' (where's L. Armstrong? LOL) is very similar to my Q at Celtic's game (H. Larsen time) to Celtic fans, all dressed in Celtic's outfits in Ft. Lauderdale Prot (O2) pub: 'Why do they have only one ball? Shouldn't they give each player his own ball….?'
Simply Red 'Somethinggot me started'
icnif77:
Q: 'Where did all 'players' go?'
A: 'They all run after ONE ball (for 90 minutes)' LOLO2 I think I have ADD! 'ATTENTION Deficit Disorder', while I'm forced to watch soccer for 90'! O2
I may be wrong on this observation but could one of the reason China isn't FIFA bound or more inline with international play is there isn't a lot of left footed players. I rarely see any level of football ( soccer ) players kick with their left foot.

Not sure if you're being serious about this comment... I hope not.
Good question! I will reply with another question ( as I have done in my adult classes ) why do the female Chinese teams seem to do so well e.g.football, volleyball, hockey etc on the world stage, but not so the men?
I kinda knew the answer within myself.
But one very astute female student put it as such....'the women work together/co-operate for common success, they realise that teamwork is essential'.
Not so the guys, they are out there more for individual glory therefore..lack of team success!
Hard to argue against, also lack of physicality & talent would be factors, I'd say
Yup. The women are by far the best team players here.
And the best bosses.
Try join a team activity or sport with the local chinese, you will see almost 0 teamwork and they severely lack the understanding of the games. As for physical strength etc I don't think Chinese are inferior because the new generation have better nutrition. The problem is their mindset, they just don't give a shit about teamwork and won't do things properly.
The simple answer is that they can't beat Australia (a country with a smaller population than Guangzhou)... and that's pretty sad. I have heard it said that the GZ football team is better than the national team. Reasons? Not a clue!
Chinese sports teams always seem to get into fights with their opponents. I remember they get into a fight with Georgetown a few years ago.
jetfire9000:
Yep, I remember that!
Not a surprise in the least either, is it!? Ever try working out in a gym, and everybody is staring sooo hard and trying to compete in obvious ways, lift what you're lifting, when all they end up doing is making you wanna laugh hard, as well as doing lifts in a way that are bound to give them major joint problems.
Never really imagined it, but China has a bad type of "macho" culture developing. That Georgetown fight was just another instance showing this.
Evergrande is a good soccer team but they are more the Manchester United of China. They didn’t train their players to be good they just bought the best players. Unfortunately with national teams that isn’t an option.
liantohusin:
Are you mistaking Manchester United with Chelsea ? I'm pretty sure Ferguson build the team almost from scratch lol. Manchester United and Arsenal are the good example of building a team.
Not a futbol fan (Sorry, I'm not gonna say football, cause that is something else to me ) Maybe the Chinese just don't practice it in proper conditions? Every field I have seen is completely swamped with people to the extent that teams play quarter or half field. o.O Even then there are people not in the game darting on and off, doing other things. Seems they don't have a real chance to play in a more pristine format.
A good question.
I posed a similar question to my adult class, i.e. why do the Chinese female teams (e.g. volleyball, soccer, hockey, baskelball) do so well on the world stage, but so the men?
One of my brightest female students replied: 'Its because the women work as team, co-operate together to achieve team success.. the men dont this so much, they are out more for individual glory"
Say no more...
First population has very little to do with a countries success at soccer. Norway with only three million population have beaten Brazil a wold cup super power. Soccer is not that popular in China.
Seriously china needs to recruit foreigners into there game before a progress can be made because they need the strength and experience required though they are trying there best in making all things possible... kudos to all Chinese footballer
I was told by a friend of mine who follows Chinese soccer that the problem is the nation's corruption even bleeds into its soccer program and players are often put on the team through connections, not skill.
Because they're a bunch of great big girlybottoms!
But then again...that shouldn't preclude them from being any good at soccer.
