I will be a newcomer to Dalian within the next month or two. After almost 6 years' experience in the UAE, I was wondering what the "essential-don't-forgets" are for newcomers to China. Any ideas?
rubbers
deodorant
shaving blades
cologne
patience

I am not married. And I do not need rubbers, dislike them, do not use them.
But if I were home, and coming to China, I would bring at lest a gross of them, first they are a hell of lot better quality, do not tear by looking at them. Second, they will be the right size, not like trying to get a size 13 foot into a number 8 size shoe. And third, fresh ones hold a good resale value.
Give you an example. Three 25 mg Chinese Viagra sell at local drugstores for 485 yuan. 50 mg real Viagra sells back home for about $1.50 each in quantities. You could make quite a profit doing so, and I do know a gentleman who seels them at 100 yuan per pill, and doesnothing else, even quit teaching.........
Buy 100 and pay $150 USD, and can sell them here for alomost $2,000 USD. And if you sll the real McCoy, you will have many repeat customers.
the only things not available to buy in China are foods that you have learned to love at home.......... agree with the guy above... patience patience patience.........happy happy happy demeanor would be a great thing to bring too, it just seems to make everything better.............. China is a pretty good place to be!!!!!!!!
like he said, get your shaving cream, razors, deodorant, cologne before you come. Available here, but way pricey. Oh and some cologne is really hard to find (except in HK of course).
I also have never found Fritos here, and tortilla chips and cheese-dip, picante sauce are waaay expensive also !

wow, thx ! never crossed my mind to taobao for munchies ! thx again,,, :-p
The usual things I stock up on during my return trips home are:
-Deodorant (no brands here I've ever heard of)
-Ground coffee (I can't stand the instant coffee that's prevalent here)
-Supplements, vitamins, medicine (some things you can get here, some you can't, and some you just don't know the quality/safety of...)
-Clothes and shoes that fit (I'm not a big guy, 173cm 75kg....but nothing here fits me except the oddball XXXL jacket or pair of pants or something from an expensive international brand store...maybe).
-I don't use one....but if you need access to censored websites while you're in China, setup your VPN before you get here.

Hmm...may have to nag the gf into getting some for me. Thanks for the heads up!

Nope. In a small town outside Ningbo. We just got our first Starbucks and Pizza Hut...
If you shoe size is more than 44 (EU Size) then bring an extra pair from home
If you are a 6' male, them clothes and enough shoes, is you are short - no problem, other items as per above, you could bring a suitcase full of cheese, so you won't go without and could probably sell it here for big bucks. Lost of things I never found , spices even common ones like cinnamon, vanilla, tomato sauce, fill up on beef before you come- beef is kinda not good.
If you are female, no idea, maybe bras. i don't think they sell unpadded bras in China.
Bring yourself a stovetop coffee maker.

This! I went for a long time without proper coffee in China. I finally found a drip/filter coffee maker though (they had Philips and Panasonic brands at the local Gomz store). Life has been much better since.
