Q: What are the absolute must see attractions in Harbin?
Going to Harbin for two days only in the next few days. What are the must see's and do's when I am there. The main reason for going is to check out the new high speed rail line but would appreciate some advice on what to see when there. Will be staying in the part of the city near Saint Sophia chuch.

Dalian to Harbin. Goes through Shenyang where I am so seeing as it is just starting to operate at 300kph on the 21st I thought i would check it out. Just over a 2 hour trip from Shenyang to Harbin
Woody, let me know how that goes. I'm doing the same as well when the weather warms up. A 3 hour trip to the beach is acceptable.
Harbin? Well the Ice Festival is over so I guess the Tiger Park is the other option. There's a great little shop near the river that sells Russian made goods - some quite unique. Carrefours has an awesome foreign food section. The shops underneath the church are worth a look. Lunch at Hamamas near the university is a must do!
PS: Try not to look Russian ok? You will never get a taxi!!

Woody's an Aussie... he's not likely to be too impressed by the tiger park. Sure, nice and open, and you see lots of Siberian tigers, and some lions... but the captivity aspect leaves a lot to be desired. (not the worst zoo I've been too.. unfortunately :(
Also, I'm not really sure he's going to care all that much about western shopping....

Well I never really found a place in Harbin that I would really recommend so I was just being helpful to a fellow Australian. Apart from the Ice Show I couldn't really give a good reason to visit Harbin.
If you would go there in January/February you should see the Ice Festival. I think thats the best to see in Harbin. Apart from that they got a very interesting Tiger park, where you can feed a bunch of tigers and watch them from a car (kind of safari style). As you are already staying near the curch, check that out as well. Furthermore there is a Stalin park.
You will be staying near Center Street so you are well situated to see all the shopping venues you can handle. Check out Europlaza, have a Starbucks and go downstairs to the Western Grocery store. It's cool. Tons of Russian shops on Center Street too and the best thing is that it's a walking street. Find the Photo-Bar (on Center Street) and slip in for a beer too.
If you are into panoramic views, a trip up the Dragon Tower might be your thing. If you are a grizzly, morbid type you could even go to the place where the Japanese alledgedly carried out experiments on POW's and Chinese civilians. I believe that is in an area called Pingfang to the south of the city.
Obviously, St Sophia's church... take a good camera. But, be prepared - it's a pretty small place!
Watch out for the rip-off taxis 
-731 is good if you are a history buff. Otherwise it's a propaganda fest
-Tiger Park is awesome
-Old Russian Quarter is run down, but a treat
-Zong Yang Da Jie is your European walking street. Rather rare in China.
-Blues is still a rather bizarre drinking place by Chinese standards
-The river is nice. I went swimming. Oh yeah.
-Harbin is my favorite city in China.
