Q: What are acceptable presents for parents of Chinese girlfriend?

I'm most likely going to meet the parents of my Chinese girlfriend soon, and I was just wondering what types of gifts is it most common or accepted to buy?

Come to think of it - should I offer them anything for their birthdays? is it expected?

A healthy baby son! Only joking (in part). Get the mother an expensive Western brand facecream and the dad a designer cologne. If they're a bit more on the peasant sid of the scale, get the dad a carton of marlboro cigarettes and the mother a tin of cookies.

Get the father cigarettes or cigars. If he doesn't smoke get him a bottle of wine. (Any kind).

cigarettes and alchol are always right. That will be great if you bring with that from your home country.

When it comes to this, I'm lamed and shamed.

I remember giving branded watches to my parent in laws and it broke. I spent a fortunate on the watches but it didn't last for long. I guess less than 3-4 months and sadly.

They are not into cigars, cologne or tin of cookies... My lady suggested that I give a golden necklace to her mother and a mobile phone to her father...Do you call that a gold-digger?

Just because I'm a foreigner, she expects a lot from me. She got 2 other Chinese son in laws and she doesn't expect that much from them because they are jobless, academically not qualified, financially not stabled and mostly, physically not fit and she got a son that doesn't last for more than 1 month in a job but when it comes to me, I hear a whisper of slogan," SQUEEZE HIM OUT PEOPLE!" Crying Crying Crying

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
