Oh gosh there's a huge list of good books:

"China's Best Actor: Wen Jiabao"
"Big River, Big Sea — Untold Stories of 1949"
"La la la"
"Beijing Doll"
"Life and Death in Shanghai"
"Wild Swans : Three Daughters of China"
"Serve the People!: A Novel"

But you can't buy them on the mainland but they're available in HK! Wink

4. When China Rules the World
by Martin Jacques

5. Shanghai Girls and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
both by Lisa See

6. China Road
by Rob Gifford

7. The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers
by Richard McGregor

8. China Shakes the World
by James Kynge

9. China: A History
by John Keay
