Q: What are the biggest differences between Vegas and Macau?

For someone having been to both gambling capitals, what would you say are the big differences?

I can see three right off the bat.  Vegas is in USA, speak English there, (besides the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam ), and food typical of any USA city.

Macau is in Asia, Chinese spoken there mainly, and typical Asian type food.  Otherwise mostly more of the same.

They hold more events and live shows in Las Vegas than they do in Macau. Las Vegas is coined the entertainment capital of the world for a good reason. And yes it is obvious that Las Vegas is in America my home sweet country and Macau is in Asia it's not hard to see that at all. Macau is also like an island which makes it interesting the weather will be different because of this reason. In Las Vegas it gets hot so you better stay inside it's like a dessert. Macau has cool air it's really good to go outside for a stroll I've been there and went to one of the casinos. They actually have busses that go to the casinos that you want in Macau free of charge which is neat and also if it's your first time there you get to play the lucky draw game to win a small, prize, win a dinner or something else I think a drink. Las Vegas may have shuttle busses to go to the specific hotel like Macau does like any other tourist place but not like Macau has.

One of the first things that hit me was that Macau is more expensive than Vegas when it comes to betting.  For example, it is easy to find penny slots in Vegas, but the smallest bet I was able to find in Macau was around US$10.

Macau does have wonderful Portuguese (and Chinese/Portuguese mix) food and Portuguese architecture.  And it is a heck of a lot cooler there in Summer than it is in Vegas.

Also, a lot of the games you are used to in Vegas do not exist in Macau.

All in all, they both have good and bad points.  If you have the chance to go to Macau, I highly recommend it.

This is true...even at smaller casino locales in the US.  I saw a young Chinese guy donk off $600 at a baccarat table in less than 5 minutes.  Crazy.

Xpat.John:

True story: The MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas once had a 10 million dollar gold lions head as the main entrance.  The thing was like 5 stories high and you would literally walk through the lions mouth to enter the hotel.

MGM eventually removed the lions head because Chinese gamblers wouldn't enter the casino through the mouth because they thought it was bad luck.  Once the hotel removed the lions head, profits from Chinese gamblers went up by over 1,000%.

I wanna go.  Any special permit or visa required to visit Macau?  I've got a USA passport with Chinese residence permit.

Xpat.John:

As an American, you don't need a visa for Macau if you stay for less than 30 days.  However, Chinese people, since Macau is part of China, need a visa.

I used to live/work in Vegas, yes, at a Casino/Hotel Property. I've visited Macau.

Vegas is the Funnest place on Earth once you know your way around. I mean fun for city life..

The primary attractions are -  Live Entertainment /Fine Dining / Gambling.  If these things appeal to you, and you have some time and money to get to know the place a bit, I can assure you it is a place where you get a very high return for your investment. But it can also be hard on people who don't know what's up. They go there and make some poor choices and spend/lose a lot of money and get very little in return.

but if you learn your way around, it can be awesome!

Stay at Caesar's Palace if you can afford it.

go to Fremont Street for an evening.

see Penn & Teller.

See Cirque du Soleil.

and if you really have some extra cash, enjoy an awesome Steak Dinner at The Golden Steer. This is one of the main places the 'Rat Pack' used to hang out !  Extra cool..   Tongue

I found the biggest difference in the casino's between Las Vegas and Macau to be the atmosphere. As we all know from fine cinematic fables such as The Hangover, people go to Vegas not only to gamble, but to have a really awesome time. Crowds on the casino floor are boisterous, fun and generally a good time had by all, except if losing of course. In Macau, on the other hand, I found the atmosphere to be much more serious. Gamblers took the games far more seriously, things seemed to be much quieter in general and, most surprisingly, there was almost nobody drinking. Both places have their advantages and disadvantages, but I think for a good all-round piss-trip with the boys sans-missus, Vegas is the place to go.
