Q: What are the 'city' hotel-embassies in Beijing used for nowadays?

As I understand it, all over Beijing are massive buildings reserved specifically for people from a certain cities spread all over China - almost like mini-embassies where these officials stay when they come to Beijing.

Anyone have any number on these buildings, their history, or what they're used for nowadays?
