For instance, in Canada and the USA "Conservatives" as we call them, are often gun-owning, pick-up truck drivers. Liberals are often city living, software types.
As a liberal, conservatives drive me nuts with their anti-union talk and insaitable need to own dirtbikes and chainsaws.
What is the difference in China?
I think the Chinese equivilent would be the priviledged class and the working class here, but without the redneck stuff.
Because of the form of government here and constant propaganda, people here generally do not have strong political beliefs as they are all on the same one party boat.
There are just rich elite and poor working people that either hate the elite or wish they had money and power too. The rich of China could be considered conservative as they love the government and have no mercy or compassion for the poor and unprivedged.
Trying to get people here to talk politics is about as easy as teaching a local good table manners.
i think non progressive drink the kool aid, and progressives want to progress out of this country
Despite the so-called multipartism, China has only one party : the Communist Party, whose members are not elected by the the people. Therefore, there isn't such distinction among Chinese people. Moreover, in order to get good jobs to work for the government, you need to be member of the CCP.
Saying that, I would just add that progressive Chinese are those who think that liberalism is a way to make more money, while non progressive Chinese are those who think that not changing things will contribute to make them richer.
nevermind:
Brush up, there are actually liberal and progressive wings of the party, as well there are parties within the party.
I think the non-progressives join the "Coffee-Party"...
I do not think the rich of China love the Communist Party, only rich government workers do. The elite of China are immigrating to America in record numbers via Investment Immigration. I have met many rich people who constantly criticize China and the Communist Party (most are business people).
I would see the progressives here as the following: want to change things through the Communist Party (open up trade more, be more "green", end Party corruption, expand personal liberty/rights, increase opportunities for poor people and ethnic minorities, increase diplomacy abroad). Non-Progressives seeing maintaining the current pattern as the best way for the country.
And then you have those that want the Communist Party gone, and multi-party systems in place and perhaps some form of democracy. These people are called revolutionaries, and in China people that actually have such motivations are small in number and voice.
