Q: What are the huge fruits that look like giant grapefruits called?

When I was down in Shenzhen I noticed head-sized yellow fruits that looked and tasted like grapefruits, except not quite. There was a lot of white, fluffly 'padding' right between the skin and the actual fruit inside.

Anyone know what these are?

That would be a pomelo, and they are really tasty too. The skin and pith is bitter in contrast to the flesh.

Its a pomelo ( 柚子 yòuzi) , its in the grapefruit family I believe.

There are two kinds that I commonly see, one with white fruit inside and one with red fruit inside. I've heard the red fruit one is slightly sweeter, but I personally stick to the white fruit one because its a bit Cheaper. Depending on the type, size, weight and quality, they normally range anywhere from 10-12 RMB all the way up to 20-30 for the "premium" ones.

Also, I've heard that some people will wear the peeled rine on their head, as the essences are nourishing for the hair. I have not tried that yet.
